Fuel pump problems
Fuel pump problems
To start off the car in question is a 1995 Z28, auto, 2.73's. Its 100% stock except for a K&N air filter. So last week I decide to take it to the drag strip. First run I bust out a 13.9 with a pretty weak launch. Next run I got a 13.70 @ 101 from just rolling onto the gas off idle. Needless to say I was pretty happy. Anyway after the second run I get back to the pits and the car just stumbles, dies and refuses to start again. First thing my friends and I thought is that the Opti had taken a crap. The car has 79K on the original opti and I though it had probably burned out. So last night I replaced the opti. It started right up and it was idleing and running better than I had ever seen it. All was good until we took it out to get some food and in the parking lot it just suddenly died again. One of my friends noticed that he didn't hear the fuel pump kick on. So he beat on the rear deck right above the fuel tank. The car started back up again and ran long enough for us to get it home before it died again. Does this sound like a fuel pump problem?
My next question is that I have a stock pump that came out of my Typhoon that only has bout 10K on it. Will it fit the Camaro? Also I've heard that if you take a fuel pump out of gas and let it sit in the air for a long time all the seals dry out and its no good anymore. Anyone heard of this? Sorry for the long post and thanks for all the help.

First rule of thumb Unless you have S@#$ loads of money, always investigate the problem before shot gunning parts.
Second rule of thumb Go for the easy check items first.
So this brings us back to the fuel problem. No the typhoon pump will not fit the Z.
Now get a fuel pressure gage with a hose and tape it to the windshield. You should know it hooks to the schrader valve on the fuel rail back by the firewall. Watch the pressure when you begin to have a problem. Pressure should be between 40 and 50 psi depending on a lot of things. A couple of things are worth checking also. Replace the fuel filter if you haven't already done so and pull the fuel pump relay (under the dead pedal driver side) check for pin corrosion and reseat.
The symptom you have is very indicative of a failing fuel pump. DO NOT buy important electrical items from cheap auto stores like Auto Zone or Advance. Don't be hooked by "lifetime" warranties either. These important electrical items should be purchased from the OEM. Dal can get you a good price. Or you could go with quality HI-Po parts like some of us.
Good luck and post what you found. We like to hear of people fixing problems.
