Fuel pump
I did a search on this and didn't find exactly what I was looking for although a lot of what I found is useful. This is more of a sanity check than anything else. I go out to my car this morning and try to start it. It turns over and runs for a second then dies. I try to start it again and the engine cranks but doesn't start (the car had been running fine up to that point). Tonight I went out with a freshly charged battery and some starting fluid. I sprayed starting fluid in the intake and try to start it, it cranks, then turns over and runs (rough) for about a second or two then dies. All tries after that results in just cranking without it turning over. I did notice tonight that I don't hear the pump (have about 1/2 a tank of gas) whirring. I do hear the relays clicking but nothing else. I haven't checked the fuel pressure or pressure regulator (car in sitting in my works parking lot and they frown on "parking lot maintenance). I'm pretty sure the pump has failed but can anybody confirm this based on the little info given here?
Shoebox, thanks for the reply. You're absolutely correct, I should check that with a gauge. I was asking at the time when I had no tools with me and I just wanted a low level thought at that point. I have a pressure gauge and I'll check it tonight.
I went out and put a pressure gauge on the schrader valve and turned the key to prime the pump (did not try and start engine) again, did not hear the pump whirring. Looked at the gauge and it only read 16 psi, so can I safely assume that the pump is bad?
