Fuel problem? Any help?

I just bought a 94 z28.....been 2 days of ownership and now i smell gas in the interior, outside, idle, and just about any other time in or outside the car. I found a leak in the rear end under the rear quarter/bumper....does this happen normally, and what can be done to fix it? what costs are involved? etc.

i know there isn't much i can do other than take it to a shop to get diagnosed professionally/rape your wallet.

Re: Fuel problem? Any help?

I had a fuel line start leaking right where it comes out of the tank. I bought a metal fuel line connector and some good hose clamps. I double clamped it on each side and called it a day. End of my bad gas mileage problem. I never really did smell it though.

I say get under the car and check that the Catalytic converter is still there/in tact. If you tap on it, you shouldnt hear any rattling noises.
A gutted/no cat will make the car smell a tiny bit like raw fuel at idle and stuff. When you are driving, if its noticable you have a problem.

And not to be on your case about it, but with these cars, you really should start to learn to do some of your own work. That goes for any fast car really. Part of owning a fast car, is that something always is giving you problems. It would get really expensive taking it somewhere all the time. And this board is a great place to learn.

Sounds like you found a nice car. All-Stock usually means it was babied too. How many miles on it?

hey,
i had the same exact problem and so has a couple buddies. Look behind the driver's side rear wheel (you might have to lay on the ground to see it) and look up. there will be what i think to be a fuel reservoir. its a black cylinder about the size of a coffee can. i had the same problem and i looked under there and found that one of the hoses had come off and the cylinder had been broken off of the bracket that it was mounted on. chevy used two spot welds to hold the canister on. [ EDIT ] that, just take a couple screws and put it back up there your self. re attach the hose and i can garantee that you wont smell gas anymore.

Re: Fuel problem? Any help?

I appriciate the help...and yes, in the past 6 months I have learned that taking care of the car myself is a lot better and I like to learn my cars well, so it works out in the end. Some things of course have to be done professionally, that and I dont have all the time in the world (except, now that the spring semester at state is over, i do have time) and need to have it done while at work or something like that. Between a couple local fbody owners and some friends who are mechanics, I'm sure to be set with any issue that comes my way. I'll take a look for those symptoms tomorrow morning and get back to you guys. Thanks again!

That's your charcoal canister mounted in the back of the wheel well.
