Fuel pressure jumping around?
My pressure dances around from 38psi-44psi when running, and my gauge is making noise. The pressure holds when you cut the car off,and doesn't fall at wot?
Mine goes from 36psi to 46psi depending on engine vacum.
with the engine off it maxes out at 40psi.
About your gage making noise.... could you be more specific? what kind of noise? could it be fuel injector noise??

I know it souldn't move around at idle?
I am almost sure the ticking sound is fuel injector noise.. they click and the sound is transmited through the gasoline. It should not be loud at all.... barely perceptible though.
Do you have a big cam with a lopey idle and low vacum? that may be the reason why your fuel pressure is so unstable... I am assuming you have a vacum line connected to your fuel pressure regulator right?

Do you mean when you are crusing around town it is at 38psi, and then when you press the gas it moves up to 44psi, and then settles back down to 38psi again? If so that is normal, if not please describe it a little better.
I just tested my vehicle for that clicking sound that you were talking about. With the engine at idle I grabbed the fuel line before the fuel rails and sure enough I can clearly feel the Fuel injector clicking vibrations on the fuel line....I think your gage is just amplifying the pulses to an audible level.
One more thing about your fuel pressure... the regulator controls the pressure by using engine vacum. anytime the vacum drops below a threshold level the fuel pressure increases. Unless you completely disconect your engine vacum to your fuel pressure regulator you will see those fluctuations under normal driving.
Why dont you try this test, unplug the vacum line... plug it with a small screw or something and drive around for a few minutes, your fuel pressure should be high but steady... if it still has those wild swings you may have a fuel delivery problem... either your pump is on the way out or there is a loose powerline conection to your fuel pump somewhere.

Exactly what kind of fuel pressure gauge do you have..... mechanical or electornic? I see its an AutoMeter, so that tells me it isn't the typical problems from some of the other brand digital gauges. If it is electronic, which model? How old is it? Exactly where is the pressure sensor located?
