ft-lbs on diff cover?

I just got the baby out and Im getting ready to go down for the gathering 7. I changed my rear end fluid today and my generic manual says to torque a 1/2" bolt to 50 to 80 ft-lbs but that seems awful tight, is that right? Also my SS came with the Torsen and that "AAF" (?) aluminum diff cover, if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
Pat

25 lbs ft for the aluminum cover bolts. If you have the set screws that preload the bearing caps, those are 5 lbs ft.

OK, one more dumb question, so what if I torqued them to 50!? Should I back off? I'm afraid it will leak then...or will it shatter under stress if I leave it that tight?
Thanks-
