Question Flow control valve (restrictor) necessary?

I need to replace my heater hoses. Does this valve need to be replaced?

(reference: #13 on shbox's diagram)

I replaced my hoses and don't remember seeing this so either it doesn't need to be replaced or is not needed. Ill look tomorrow and see if I have it installed. Is it clogged or broken?

I do think its needed if you want hot air in winter. Its was 25 bucks at dealer but was able to get mine for under 20 and the next day from advance auto. In case you dont know the replacement hose is 3 pieces I believe and its pretty easy to get the original factory clamps off to put new hose on the metal parts. I need to finish replacing mine as had two bad spots and motor is out so would be easier now to just replqce the rest.

The flow restriction orifce is in the supply line to the heater core, so it isn't there to insure high flow to the heater core in the winter. Just the opposite. Since the heater does not have a shutoff valve and coolant flows to it all the time, the orifice it there to limit the flow to the heater, so the coolant doesn't bypass the engine.

Re: Flow control valve (restrictor) necessary?

Good point Fred. I know I searched around when I had to replace mine and there was someone saying their heater didnt get warm when they tried to run without it so perhaps that was a different problem or if the flow isnt going through the motor as needed perhaps it created a circulation problem .that also effected the heater. Because it is intended to direct flow into the motor and not the heater is even more reason to run it. Kinda leads me to a question of bypassing the heater core in the hot summer months if that would produce any worthwhile results with cooling benefits??

Does anyone know where to purchase this valve? I have been trying to find one so I can run it with my own hose.

10188036 at your GM dealer or I am pretty sure I have heard of people getting one at their local parts store.

If you buy the complete GM hose assy, it is included.
