First Time Changing My Own Oil?????

Ok, i'm going to change my own oil for the first time ever. what do I need?
Should i use 5w 30 or 10W 30? and how much do I need? I'm goign to be using full synthetic moble one.
I've also seen that there are two part numbers for the oil filter, what one is right?
and what size wrench (or is a socket better) do i need to get the drian plug out?
am I missing anything else?

sorry for asking n00b questions, I read the how to on of the members site, but still have these questions. thanks.

Its too late. Might is well rebuilt the Engine. You suppose to change oil 3K miles to 7.5K miles. Depending on the Drive. I change Oil and Filter every 5K miles. Since you live in Canada; Change it with 5W-10. I really do think your Engine is GONE.

I would go with a 10w 30 oil (but that depends how cold it gets where you live, 10w 30 is only good for I belive zero degrees to 120 degrees). Get a K&N oil filter. I'ts part #is ph 2002. It's easy man, just make sure you prelube the gasket on the new filter (fist make sure the filter has a gasket, if it don't then check the box it came in for it. it should have a gasket) Also make sure that the old gasket from your last filter is completly off you block before you squrew in your new filter. Good luck

haha, it was always changed on time, jsut not by me, I always had it done. but realized thati can save a good 20 bucks by doing it myself.

thanks for the help, it was really cold last week (-40) and the 10W 30 was good, so I think i'm going to stick with that.
I dont know what the numbers for the oil wieght mean, but wouldnt 5W 10 be really thin?
are one of them tools to remove the oil filter a good purchase?

I'd use 4 parts 5-10 and 1 part 10-30. Its damn cold dude.
switch in the summer. how do you know it was ok?

just go trial and error on the sockets, i forgot what it is.

lube the top of the oil filter and fill it with oil before u put it on. tighten it by hand. dont over or undertighten anything. for best results tilt the car up so all the oil pours out.

you should use about 5.5 qrts

Some things not mentioned yet:

- Run the engine and warm it up a a bit to heat the oil so that it is thin and flows freely (along with all contaminants)

- Drill or punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter to drain it initially (before loosening) so that you dont have gobs of hot oil pouring off of and around it.

- wear thick gloves (due to hot oil) I just use some old leather ones.

socket size is 15mm.

i hear what works real well is using an old new paper sack to wrap around the filter that way it makes no mess. i dont mind getting a little oil on my hand so i just do it the messy way

only problem with changing your own oil is having a place to store it. need some 5 gallon jugs or something to keep the old oil in.

and incase you are wondering you have to get the car off the ground so you will need ramps. and definitely an oil pan. running the car a little first is a good idea since it stirs up the junk in your pan and the oil poors out better but its also hotter of course.

I slip one of those plastic sleeves that they put your newspaper in when the weather is wet, over the filter. No mess.

so put one liter of 10W30 and fill with 5W10?
switch to what in the summer? 10W30?

i dont know if it was ok, it seemed like it, started good, and oil pressure wasnt low or high, and didnt make any unussual noise.

we dont get our papers delivered in a bag ever, but any bag should work right?

And what kind of places can you take the used oil to?

thanks for all the help, i'm goign to be doing this tomorrow after noon, goign to have to get a couple pieces of wood so i can make it onto my ramps though.

O ok. I thought you were changing the oil in that car for the very first time.
I would do this way. Go and by any brand name with 5W-30 oil have SH API rating (Most of the do). Get Oil drainer. When ever you come from work or school. Give a hour and then just reach under the car. Use 15MM socket to lose it up. Then push the oil drain pan the drain plug. Take it off by the hand. let it drain. Open the oil filler cap. Go and get a Beer or some thing. Once you done with the beer. Go back pull back the Oil drain pan. Put the drain plug back on. You may have to jack the car up to undo the Oil filer. Its right by the left tire and front of the oil pan. Lose it up. Care full to take it off make sure you don tilt or any thing. Its full of oil. Take a new filter put a thin layer of new on the rubber sleant of the oil filter. Do the hand tight the filter.
Put the 4.5 QT oil in it. Do a 30sec engine run. Turn off and give a min. check the level. If its low add some more. Make sure you dont go over 5 Qt.
Total time 15min.
Get an AC Delco or what ever you can get hands on. Just dont get Phram (sp). they are over priced and they dont have reverse valve lock on it.
You are done!
Make sure its warm area. Other wise you might cathch a cold

The 15 mm will work, but I think the exact size is a 9/16" because I had the 15mm originally and it had some play. the 9/16" fit like a glove, but maybe my bolt is partially stripped or something. I just drained mine last night :-). Next step, remove radiator. I'll do that at halftime.
