Few Q's
Few Q's
I just got a 95 Z28 stock with 37k. I want to get a air intake system for my car but was wondering which intake is better, SLP or Moroso? Also was wondering if i would see any performance gains with a slp LM2 exhaust. I've heard the LM1 and wont get it because my girl friend will be driving the car as well. Another thing is I was wondering what octane gas I should use in the car. I've been told 91 and also told 87 is okay too. So till i get a sure answer I've been using 89. Thanks for the help, Justin
From the Owner's Manual:
In summary, the engine is tuned to run on premium fuel. If you use lower octane fuel, the knock sensor may cause the PCM to retard the engine timing, and reduce power output. No damage - the knock sensor is there to protect the engine - unless the fuel is of such poor quality that the knock retard system is not capable of retarding the timing enough (15-degree max), and the knock (detonation) becomes audible.
If you have a scanner, you can monitor the PCM's knock retard, to determine if the lower octane fuel is causing you to lose HP.
I doubt there is any difference in performance between the SLP and Moroso CAI's. They will both help your engine breathe better. A full catback, with a 3" intermediate pipe will also help. Which one you pick depends on the sound you are after.
5.7L LT1 (Code P)
Use premium unleaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher. You may use middle grade or regular unleaded gasolines, but your vehicle may not accelerate as well...... Be sure the posted octane for premium is at least 91 (at least 89 for middle grade and 87 for regular). If the octane is less than 87, you may get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If its bad enough, it can damage your engine.

As this says most Brand Name CAI's are the same, the price just changes. LM2 should help.
Last year I had my car dyno-tuned. The programmer at the dyno said my SLP was holding me back. I could see that around 4800 RPM that my MAP was building pressure in the manifold.
I thought that building pressure in the manifold was an exhaust restriction.
Either way, he recommended the Moroso and he says that when he dyno-tunes vehicles equipped with those cars that he does not see the MAP rise.
So, nothing proven, if he had one available I would have bolted it up for a comparison.
His word says Moroso.
I'm happy with my SLP.

I really can't afford a Borla set up and don't care to pay that much for a Exhaust. I had a slp air intake on my 95 (3.4) and liked it so maybe i will stick with that. As far as a exhaust, I'm still undecided. It's definitely between a SLP LM1 and a LM2. Thanks for the replies. Justin
