Fan belt smoking

Got through the longest trip no problem, drove from Iowa to kentucky (where I am now for vacation). Went to start the car up yesterday to go to my gf's sons graduation. Anyways, the AC didnt work and the fan belt started smoking around the AC pulley.
Shut it off, tried it again a few hours later. Ran fine. Turned the AC on, it worked just fine till a few min later the belt started to smoke again.
SES light also came on regardless.
Anyone else have this trouble? Im guessing the belt is just stretched and needs a new one (this one has at least 30,000 miles on it). Gonna go get a new one here in a few and try that.
Anyone else have any Ideahs?

Replace the belt and hope it goes away...

If something is dragging it can cause too much friction and cause things to overheat. Your ac could possibly be messed up.

BTW, it's called an accessory belt. I don't mean to nitpick, but when I read the title I was like "Fan belt? LT1? WTF?"

ya ya, no biggie there. I know its accessory belt :-) Fans are electric.
it SHOULD be called big long pain in the A** belt that runs everything :-)
And yes, Im hoping my AC compressor isnt starting to sieze up. Just seems strange, compressor isnt making any noises like bearings going bad or anything. And it does work as long as the belt can turn it.
The belt does feel a bit loose, got a decent amount of play in it when ya push or pull on it around the alternator.

Here's hoping.

One of two things is happening.

Either your belt tensioner needs replacing because its too loose.

Or your A/C compressor has seized.
