Failed Emissions in NJ few questions...

Hi Guys. First I want to say I'm pretty damn surprised I failed emissions. This is the third time I've brought the T/A in and the only changes I've made to it since the last inspection was MAC Headers and a new cat converter. Here are my readings...

GAS Standard Reading Result
NOx 879 387 PASS
HC 117 153 FAIL
CO% 0.65 0.32 PASS
CO2% 14.9
02% 0.2

I did a search and saw someone had mentioned if you run a BORLA with an open plate you can fail if they stick the sniffer in the muffler....which is what they did do. However, I ran a BORLA with an open plate last time and I passed with flying colors. Possible they stuck it in the other outlet this time? I think the guy also didn't know how to drive a stick and stuck me on the dyno-test in third gear, for what it's worth.

I just seafoamed the car 200 miles ago as well. Any help is always appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rip everything that has to do with emissions out of your car, and slip a mechanic a C-note to inspect your car for you. That's what I do, and it works.

Although I appreciate your response, I'm going to keep it legit here. I'm pretty close to passing, just not sure why I was over on the HC.

Spark Plugs, Wires, and OPTI all less than 1 year old. The cat is about 10-11 months old as well as the headers.

If you've got a borla, just put on the fully closed plate to let the muffler take some of the load off the emissions, that's usually the easiest way to pass it. I dunno if that will change your HCl but I thought you were supposed to run emissions with the emissions legal plate on the exhaust (the fully closed one.)

The other plates aren't emissions legal? I guess I should do that then. Anyway, what's weird is now they give you some sort of form you have to fill out in order to take the test again, they ask you what you did to your emissions system, and it even has a whole thing for an emissions place to fill out should you take it to a certified shop. I'm definitely putting the plate on for inspection now. I'm bummed I'll have to wait in mega-line again.

you are so close and really as far as fails go-you have an easy fix-your kind of lucky the nox is good. all of the other gasses show me that you have a car that is putting the air and fuel together to ensure the most efficient use of the mix. they are also telling me that your secondary (most likely)ignition system is not up to the task of lighting off that mix. either take a close look at your plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and find the slacker(s) in the group or if you are running a cooler stat swap the factory one back in there for the test and get the car good and warmed up before the test-the easiest way to fail with a borderline car is to go to the test station shut it off get set up for the test and then restart it to take the test. if that is what happened ask the guy to pre-condition the car before running numbers on it.
