Question Failed Emissions...again....

Well I was able to bring my hydrocarbons down....A LOT, and now i'm failing CO (reading 1.49%...allowable .67%) and NO (reading 922ppm...allowable 848ppm) A buddy of mine told me that there is something you can spray just before the test that would help pass it. I don't know if I believe that or not...would have to see it to believe it. Another thing that I have heard was to just put something in the side where they will be testing from in the tailpipe to restrict the flow...anyone ever heard of either of these??

Is it a stock cam/cat car you are failing with?

it's a 94...no noise from the cat and the car ran for about 30 minutes before the test...changed the oil and cleaned out the fuel injection a week before the test

I tell you what i would is take you car to a muffler shop have them torch a hole a your cat and see if its all there. Really, I did that just to see if that was why mine was failing and the cat had actually blown itself thru the exhaust, ya know cuz that stuff in there is like ceramic or something like material and after a while it starts to break up obviously after what i saw. Half of my cat was actually missing. They shouldnt charge you to do that either i just gave the guy 5 bucks to put it on a lift and look. Try it it cant hurt

Yeah, I have a feeling that may be the case. I just wish that there was a way around it...by looking at what the sniffer read, it seems like i'm barely failing, and was hoping there would be a quick, cheap fix just for the test.

Did you change the oil before going.....also you need to get that cat hot hot hot.....run up and down the highway a few times and take it to get it tested.....dont turn it off and tell the tech to leave it running . Its so close if you do those little things it should pass.

Ok , I saw you did change the oil. Just run the car harder and longer prior to the test. I have heard you can add alcohol to the fuel to help pass also.

autozone carries something you pour in your gas and is guaranteed to make you pass or you get your money back. I forgot what it is called, i think "emissions pass" and it is in a white bottle around the bottom shelf of the additives there.

I wonder if they guarantee that you'll pass the visual....

How much alcohol should I add? Should I add it and then run it a while, or run it a while and then add it?? I don't want to add too much to where it would ruin the engine...anything I do would only be a temp fix, but i'm on a tight budget and willing to do anything to just let it slide into the "allowable" area.
Heard that maybe disconecting the PCV valve would help...anyone know anything about that?

gb95zconv, saw you lived in woodstock, ga...you wouldn't know anyone in the area who wold pass me do you?? i'm just kidding....unless you really do know someone

Go to a paint store (Sherwin Williams or Porter) and get 1 gal of denatured alcohol. When you tank is damn near empty put the gal of alcohol in and add 7 gal of prem gas. The alcohol will dramatically lower the CO and NO readings. I used it in mine to pass with the setup below.

I don't know...adding the alcohol thing seems to be the easiest and cheapest thing I can do...Not looking for a long term fix...just need to pass...thats all. I don't know anything about making the car run lean or in "test mode"...no idea how to do it. I got pulled over for the tag today, and the cop said that if I bring the new tag on the court date, they will throw out the ticket.
