Exhaust question involving o2's
Exhaust question involving o2's
I'm figuring out my exhaust system and I was curious what you guys have done with your o2's?
My plains are a loudmouth exhaust with pacesetter lt's and a pacesetter y-pipe. My car is a 96 so I'm assuming I have two 02's and two cats right? That what I found when I had the car up on stands anyway.
I want to run my o2's because from what I hear its better to have them in there to control the a/f ratio so I don't want to throw on the simulaters.
Do you guys just drill holes for the o2's? Will the way my car runs be messed up if I run no cats cause I'm assuming I can't with the lt's and y-pipe. What other problems will I run into trying to do this full exhaust system? Besides not passing inspection. Will things need to be torn out?
Any opinions or advice on exhaust options would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Exhaust question involving o2's
Okay, the Pacesetter LTs come with 02 bungs already welded in so you can use your front o2 setup, you will however, need some 12 inch extensions in order to let the harness reach the o2 sensor connection. As for the post cat. o2 sensors, you will need to either run a pair of o2 sims. or have the post-cat o2 codes deleted from your PCM by a competent tuner. The only drawbacks of having no cats. are trouble with your emissions inspections, a raw gas smell, and a little raspiness. It is possible to merge a pair of cats into the Pacesetter y-pipe. I did it with these: http://216.178.81.107/iwwida.pvx?;it...0%201?comp=ppe and I am running a pair of Caspers O2 simulators as well to take care of the post cat sensors.
The installation is not too difficult, just a little time consuming. For the drivers side, I took off the traction control motor, disconnected the steering linkage, and took out the coolant temp sensor and plugs and got the header in from underneath. For the passenger side, I removed the starter, alternator, valve cover, and plugs to get the header in from the top. Best advice though is to spray everything down for a couple of days with PB Blaster to make the dissassembly alot easier.

Re: Exhaust question involving o2's
The front O2s (in front of cats)NEVER get sims unless you want to screw up the engine. Sims are ONLY for the post cat O2s which do not affect engine operation and are only tattletails for the cats. I would suggest going with tuning to get rid of them that is money better spent than sims.
Re: Exhaust question involving o2's
Thanks for the advice. I definately have a better idea now on how this will work.
Where can I get the o2 extension from?
2000GTP when you did your headers did you do them on your back or on a lift? How long did they take you and is there anything that goes on with A.I.R. when installing the headers?
Thanks again guys.

Re: Exhaust question involving o2's
You can get the 02 extensions from Summit or Jegs, I personally got mine from SpeedInc. otherwise known as www.Ls1speed.com simply because they are located right in my area. The header install took me two weeks off and on, mainly because I work 60 hours a week at a full-time job and am a full-time college student. I did it on my back, wasn't that hard, just lay down some towels and get comfortable as you will be in that position for awhile.
Re: Exhaust question involving o2's
Sorry, I forgot to mention, the Pacesetter headers w/ AIR and EGR will reuse the factory equipment. The AIR lines fitted up perfectly, however, the EGR was a chore. I have an automatic so the EGR fitting on the header was conflicting with the trans. dipstick. I had to take the header out of the car, heat up the fitting, and bend it about a full inch towards the firewall in order for it to clear the trans. dipstick. I would also recommend some new poly motor mounts if your existing ones are worn out.
