What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
I was wondering what pulley i should get? I have the G2 underdrive crank pulley already but it piggybacks the harmonic balancer. I was looking at switching it to one that doesnt do that like the ASP, which i hear is good. I am doing LE1 heads with a Joe O cam. LT's, OFY, 30# inj, 52mm, elec. WP etc.. It will be driven about 2 or 3 times a week. What one should i get. Thanks. -Matt
Re: What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
Well I am getting down to the point where every little bit counts and its not a very expensive mod. $100 for the crank and alt. pulley. Anyway what is everybody running that is running the ASP pulleys. 23% or 34%? Thanks for the replys. -Matt
Re: What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
23% and I dont recommend any other type. You should replace the whole balancer/pulley with the 23%. Otherwise your adding weight to the rotating assembly. Generally guys who one report .1-.2 tenth gains. I felt the car rev more freely and reach higher RPMs quicker. Its a great peice and the ONLY pulley I would put on my car. I only need the Crank pulley, but some needed a ALT overdrive. I'd just raise the idle RPM to compensate for charging issues instead of being counter productive with a overdrive pulley.

Re: What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
I dont like the 34% since its just the same as every other brands piggy back pulley. The trick is always to reduce rotating weight and it does the opposite. It would be like adding an aluminum driveshaft only its twice a heavy at the steel one. (for example) Also many people feel that adding that extra weight on top of the stock balancer has caused internal problems in their engines. I'd stick to just the replacement type.

Re: What ASP pulley? 23% or 34%?
I just got my ASP pulley the other day... quality on te piece is like
I now see why these are sold out everywhere... theres a 2 week back order for the altinator and underdrive 23% set right now, but summit has the single 23% in stock. I have the piggy back style, and I think this solid piece is much more sound balancing wise.

Here are the LT1 series of pulley's. The piggy back ones are cheaper and 34%. Think about it, there is a reason they cost 1/2 as much. They also require a much higher idle rpm to compensate for the lower voltage. They add weight to your rotating mass too. Now the ones I would consider are in bold. I have the single 23% crank pulley. It works great and as Heatmaker said its quality very high. The required belts can be found on the site. When you get there go down to the street pulley's and select GM. Then it will list GM pulley's. Gates belts seem to work ok as long as you have the stock ALT pulley, but if you change that, according to 80TA you want to get a Gatorback. Here is a paragraph found on ASP's site:
"What do Underdrive Pulleys do? Underdrive pulley systems increase engine horsepower by reducing the amount of power required to drive external engine accessories. For example, the alternator, power steering, water pump and air compressor rob horsepower from the engine. By replacing factory-sized crank and accessory drive pulleys with a resized pulley, the accessories are slowed, resulting in more horsepower available to the drive wheels. Typically, a set of Auto Specialties street pulleys will increase horsepower by 12-15, and increase mileage by 2 to 3 MPG. All pulleys are manufactured from Billet Steel or Aluminum, exceeding factory quality."
You can buy straight from ASP. I am not sure if any of our vendors sell them, but I got mine for Summit for $10 less since they were on sale when I was there.
