EWP working/not working?? (long)

I've had a CSR installed for about 2 weeks and put about 250miles on it (the pump itself was used from the board a few k miles). I had no problems until last night. I noticed the temp racing for the red, shut it down. After running the pump, the temp dropped to about 180 (I could hear the pump running). I fired it up and made my way back home. The temp stayed at 180 or so the whole way home. So in my infinite wisdom I decided to turn around and keep going to my appointment. Well, at the exact same place I was last time it did it again. The temp rapidly rising to the red. Did the same thing, drove it home...was fine. That particular road I was on is about 1 mile from the house, and has a very slight incline. Nothing unusual. I chalked it up to a bad Tstat maybe since I reused a pretty old one.
This morning I dropped in a 180 thats about a year old and fired it up....but this time I don't hear the EWP! I let it run a little before noticing, then shut it down. I swapped relays and fuses and still not working. So I pulled the pump to send off for a rebuild and decided to run it laying on top of the engine. It fires right up! WTF. I let it run like this for a few minutes, and seemed fine. Just to be safe, I sent it off for a rebuild anyways. But any suggestions on what it could be? There were no signs of binding.

Did you properly burp the cooling system when you installed the water pump?

I thought I had done the cooling sys right. I used the bleed screws, etc. Asudecat, what did you end up doing about the EWP?
