Everyone with an aftermarket cam get in here!
Everyone with an aftermarket cam get in here!
Ok I'm running a CC306 without cats. Two of my friends have lt1s with cams, one has a CC503, and one has a custom nitrous grind in his 383 that's in the 240s. Both of their cars have a cool sweet kinda smell to their exhaust that I believe comes from running a cam. However my exhaust doesn't have this smell and I'm wondering why.
Both of my buddies are running no cats like me.
My car did have the same kinda smell a little bit when it was untuned running open headers, but now that it's tuned (Ion) and running through the y-pipe and cutout, my cam smell is gone and now it just smells like gas. The only time I get the smell is at first startup when the engine is cold and it's loping like crazy
Ah both my friends cars are dynotuned, so maybe my tune just needs some fine tuning, the car feels and smells like it's running pretty rich down low. I'm sending Ion some datalogs in a few days.

Love the smell of race gas. You'll definetly smell a difference in exhaust fumes between a tuned and untuned car from the ammount of unburned fuel in the discharge because of the untuned car running rich.

ah so it's race gas? hm now that I think about it they both were running nitrous when I saw them. I thought it was race gas, but I just couldn't figure out why my buddy with the 503 would run race gas with a stock rebuilt motor.
Yeah basically I think it smells awesome, maybe when I throw some nitrous on it this spring I'll fill it up with race gas. If I add toluene or xylene would it smell like this too?

Re: Everyone with an aftermarket cam get in here!
There is a company that makes different "smells" to poor in your tank. Peach, apple, methanol, there is a long list. Can't remember their name but a Google search might turn up something. It doesn't do anything but smell different it's not a booster or cleaner.
Re: Everyone with an aftermarket cam get in here!
my 383 has a decent size cam and a dyno tune by Ion, no cats, etc., etc., and it smells of gas bad, but the A/F was good?? When I get out of the car after driving it, my clothes smell of the rich exhaust.

fireman has lt4 valves, stock ports.
hm yeah the smell isn't an issue for me at all, yeah it gives you a headache after idling for 30 seconds but oh well. I've seen those fuel fragrances, a car had like strawberry or somethin at irwindale once, the whole track smelled like fruit, it was good tho. They're not compatible with cats, but I don't know if they're safe for O2 sensors?
