EVAP canister ??? What to do for tuneup at 60k

Hey guys,

Noticed on my '95 I just got that there is a small fuel odor near the back of the car after I drive it. I am not sure where its comming from.

As I've been sripping parts off my '94 parts car, I ran into what looks like an evap canister behind the little plastic protector thing in the rear drivers side fenderwell. Is this an EVAP canister? If so, should it be serviced and when? What part(s) do I need?

Car has 60,000 original miles and looks like even the stock fuel filter has never been changed. I say that 'cause it still has undercoating on it which was put on the car before it was delivered new. Friend works at a dealership where it was bought from, he looked it up.

I am thinking car could use all its filters changed, synthetic motor oil, synthetic ATF fluid for the T56, new fluid (and maybe gears) for the diff, new coolant, new PS pump fluid and maybe even new brake fluid.

Should also do the plugs/wires and install my old MSD coil. Opti seems fine as far as I can tell for the limited time I drove it.

Let me know what you guys think on that fuel smell/evap canister and tuneup ideas.

What plugs do you recommend? Car is stock, but will get headers/no cat/catback, has funct. ram air cold air kit, 1.6RR and tune, but otherwise stock car.

Thanks,

Igor.

Yes, that's the EVAP canister in the drivers rear fender, behind the removable plastic panel. The fuel smell could be the result of several things:

-rotted hoses from the fuel tank vent (common problem)
-saturated canister (do you often fill the tank to the very top?)
-excessive heat buildup in fuel due to failing fuel pump
-faulty gas cap seal
-purge system plugged up an not removing fuel vapor from canister

Re: EVAP canister ??? What to do for tuneup at 60k

I've put 15 miles on the car since I bought it (1 day) and then went out of town for work. Will be home in 7-10 days and want to start working on it.

I never had that smell on my old '94, and it had slighly more miles. I have no idea what the previous owner did with this car.

Car seems fine and does not feel like it has a failing fuel pump. When I get home, will have to fill it up with fuel and change all the filters and go from there. I plan on adding some mods right away and a wet kit, so a new pump would not be so bad. Just dropped the tank on my '94 before I left (want to use it for my '88), wasn't that hard.

Thanks for your help. Hope its not the rotting hoses.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

Igor.

Its not "bad". It just smelled a bit when you got close to the rear fender on the drivers side.

IF a guy can remove it and have no issues, by all means! HOW is it done???

Thanks.
