Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

I used the first engine off method that was on shoeboxes site...by guide thats what i meant...i might be dumb but not that dumb. I dont know what exactly happened, i just took off the drivers side valve cover and noticed only 3 pushrods still in place. I only got two of them out of the valley using a magnet and one was bent but the other was fine. Also while useing the magnet it stuck on the lifter and pulled the middle piece out of it...wtf is this bad??? or can it be fixed??

I had an idea ...don't know it if will work, but could i put the stock pushrods back in and just keep the rpms low to see if the engine runs ok or not?

thanks
james

James,

I think it would help alot if you first went ahead and told everyone about your combonation and what you have done to the engine. If i remember correctly, i dont think you are running a big cam. I would take out all the push rods and run them down a plane of glass to make sure the rest are OK. If you dont have a plane of glass, find the most level surface you can to roll them across. As soon as you give a little more about your combo and explain what you have dont to this thing, i think we can get you straightened out.

Later,
Brandon

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

LOL i guess im just too lazy to update my sig. Ive got the comp xe 230/236 with .510/.512 lift, .544/.555 with my comp magnum 1.6 rollor rockers, comp rs, homeported heads, hooker lts.

i think i didn't adjust the poly locks right and they backed them selves out and all the pushrods fell out and hit stuff causing the bend, o well from now on i guess ill just pay more attention to stuff and not get so damned excited.

ps its hard to hear anything break with open headers...i would recommend exhaust for first time start up lol.

thanks guys

The poly locks are the easy part....after you set your lash and preload you just tighten the poly's. I think you just need to get some pushrods and set the valves right this time. When you get the new pushrods and are ready to adjust the valves, send me a PM ill let you know the method i use, its one of the easiest ive ever seen. Good luck man.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

Lol i finally got the intake off and there are 3 lifters that are still good the rest are broken, 4 bent pushrods and my rockers(the selfaligning part) are kind of messed up. Its like a lifter/pushrod soup in the lifter valley. I cant believe it but i accounted for all the parts that belong on the lifters. I guess ill just but the stock lifter back in and order new pushrods and decide if the rockers are ok or not...probably just go with nsa ones and guides.

I WILL NEVER FORGET TO ADJUST THE ROCKERS RIGHT AGAIN.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

Almost sounds like you adjusted them too tight and ended up bending pushrods and thrashing some lifters. That's an odd mess you have there.

I agree with shoebox. Also i beleive you have to have your heads machined in order to use guideplates. I would stay with the self-aligning rockers.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

No i dont think i ajusted them to tight my auto shop teacher said it sounded great when i started it up but i dont know why i though i had to take it home...i just went from bad to worse.

anyways i think they were too loose causing the rocker arm to move off of the valve stem and the pushrod was then pushing off center, thus bending it. The self aligning guides are all dinged up on the rockers and i dont think i can reuse them, but ill try starting it up with the valve covers off and the stock pushrods in place(so id dont bend new ones...low rpms) and make sure that the rockers stay lined up. I just dont have the money for new rockers or for anything for that matter.

what do you think about trying this, shoebox?

thanks

With all those lifters broken, you may want to pull your heads and check your valves and pray you didnt adjust them so tight your valves hit a piston That would just add to your mess if any valves are bent.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

Brandon, i would but i would probably kill myself if i went to the work to get the heads off and then found that a valve is messed up...there is no way i got the vavles too tight because some of the pushrods weren't on the rocker arm any more, but they weren't bent at all and the lifters haden't fallen apart on them either.

I Don't care what you say i wont sleep tonight if i convince myself that a valve is bent.

lol what a mess...and to think ive been in auto shop for 4 years and worked on cars/trucks with my dad since i was 2.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

On that site bret sent it says Comp has a lifetime guarantee for breakage against their Pro Magnum Rockers. Not sure if the damage done to yours is worthy of replacement but its certainly worth a try.

I just cant justify the fact that you had 5 broken Comp R lifters from the rockers being too loose. I def could be wrong here but it will be interesting to see what you find out. Keep us up to date on your findings.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

If you had a bent valve, you would probably have sealing problems, do a compression test to see.

The reason I said "tight" earlier, was because of the lifter damage. Though, it's hard to say what will happen when things get out of whack when loose, too.

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

Hey guys, well i stayed up untill 2 am last night and i am now up and running on the stock lifters and pushrods(they are holding knock on wood untill the new ones arive).

It was definetly because the rockers were too loose because a rocker pushed down on the side of one valve retainer and one, thank you lord one, valve keeper poped out, i managed to dig it out with a magnet and then buy a valve spring compressor and put it back in.

Also, little more on the damage, 11 comp rs destroyed, 4 bent pushrods, 7 misloged but straight pushrods and 5 push rods still in place along with 5 good comp rs.

How high of rpms would you guys trust the stock pushrods(i haven't had it over 4k)?

Would you save up to buy new comp rs or just stick with the stock lifters?

O ya and the car runs good for about 5 minutes then it starts bucking and acting weird, but it stops if you turn the car off and then back on... is this cam surge, i still dont really know what cam surge is?

thanks you guys have been a great help

Re: errr bent push rod!!!!

The only pic on my heads is on my cardomain site... i didnt do much just opened both ports up and did a 3 angle valve job. My school's auto shop had the stuff to do the valve job but i had to buy some non-ferrous bits to port the heads. and i should have done some bowl work...oh well
