Error 46 Fuel Enable (VATS) Fail ?!?

Hey guys,

Never had this DTC error code before; however, I just got done putting in the new motor, and trans. Car sat for about a year, while I was rebuilding it.

Currently the car runs rich, stumbles, and gets hot. I'm not sure if it's related to this error code, but I want to start diagnosing problems with a clear error log.

Any ideas?

BTW the motor has:

355 forged internals
306cc
CompCam lifters R
stock Rockers
Stock TB
Electic Water Pump
P&P heads
New Sparkpug wires MSD

Thanks,
Dennis

Re: Error 46 Fuel Enable (VATS) Fail ?!?

I'm formiliar with the code in a 94 and if it's the same, a DTC46 will disable the engine. So chances are, it's an old code or intermittent since your car does run. When the fuel enable signal is not received by the PCM, the engine will shut down after 1.7 seconds but will not light the SES.

Since it cranks and you didn't mention that the security light is on or blinking, we can assume the key and the contacts for it in the ign switch are ok. So you want to reset the code and see if it returns.

If it does, you need to check the signal on pin 25 of connector A on the PCM which is the red connector. The wire color on a 94 is dark blue. But this may be hard since the signal has to be an AC signal and should be 40 to 60 Hz. Meaning you must measure frequency. If you can't do that, ohm it out from the PCM to the theft deterrent module. The signal on it's way from the theft deterrent module has to pass through connector C230 which is 10 pin Blue connector behind the passenger kick panel. Check the dark blue wire on pin E to be sure the pin is not bent or broke.

The theft deterrent module is located just to the right of the radio and has a green 16 pin connector. The fuel enable signal as I mentioned before is the dark blue wire on pin A3. If the problem occurs again and you ohm it as OK, you will have to view the signal itself. You can use a multimeter set to AC frequency or use something like a Snap-on Vantage.

As far as running rich and stumbling, I would start by looking at the basics. For one thing, look for a dead cylinder.

Again, I took the liberty of assuming the 93 is the same as a 94. If there is a difference, I appologize.

Whoever tuned it can take that code out. The running hot shouldn't be in the tune.. have you flowchecked the radiator? Is it tripping any other lights?

Thanks for all the info; I'll be resetting the code later today. If that doesn't work I'll just burn myself another chip and tell the EMC to ignore it.

As far as running hot, I'm really beginning to think that something’s up with the radiator. It ran hot with the old motor and it runs hot with this new one. Everything thing else has been replaced expect for that.
to clear up my radiator problem I'm going to try flushing using the most expensive radiator flush I can find, and replacing the cap. If that doesn't work I might just try replacing the radiator completely.

The stumbling is kind of intermittent. The car never really stumbles while it idles; however, the idle bounces from 825 to about 1175, and this is usually if the car is in park or neutral. When the car is in drive it idles just about 950 RPMS.
The stumbling occurs when the car is cruising, and is very apparent at about 1500 RPMS. It honestly feels like a fuel problem; however, it’s been my experience that ignition problems can often be mistaken as fuel problems. Nevertheless, I'll start with the lest expensive fixes and work my why up. So I'm starting with the fuel filter, and I'll try readjusting the valves.

I'll be sure to keep you guys posted.

Thanks again,

Dennis
