engine voltage meter drops under low

Hey, I am kinda new to this (well been a member for a while but not really posted much). I have a '97 LT1 TA and have a problem with my electrical system. On idle my car's voltage meter for the battery shows just over 13v but when I put it into gear it drops to below 13 to around 12 and then slowly continues dropping. I've had the alternator tested at Kragen and it was good and I've replaced the battery. I've checked all the cables and am now in the process of replacing the engine ground. Anyone have any thoughts?

Do you have an underdrive pulley? My car idling in gear will sit just in the red by a sliver, but as soon as i move or put the car in park all is good.

Unhappy engine load issue

No, I haven't installed an underdrive pulley system. I don't have the problem at idle but rather when the engine is under load.

It might be worth a shot to check the voltage on the battery itself. The voltmeter gauge on the dash has been known to be inaccurate.

Wink voltage

The battery is brand new, I'm thinking it might be the engine ground but the LT1 specific braided cable is tough to find.

Very true...when i first start my car it reads way past 18v(kind of like the fuel gauge does when you fill your tank up)...you put a multimeter on it and it reads 14.6V...quick and easy way to find out if your really having an overall electrical or gauge problem
