Engine turning clockwise or not(dumb question)

I know its a dumb question but i always told myself that if i got a question maybe someone else got the same too.

I just never take the time to realise wich way is the motor turning. From my logic since the Cam is rotating clockwise ,the crank should also be clockwise...right?

Thanks

Well, when you rev the car it rocks to the right like when someone gets in the pass. seat. So if your standing at the front bumper facing the car it would be considered counter clockwise. The torque causes this to happen when you rev it.

But many of the parts in the engine are turning in different directions, so I'm not really sure what the outcome of this post will be.

This is one of those did the chicken or the egg come first.

Unless you ask about a specific part that is.

First off, all directions are given from the drivers seat facing forward, i.e. normal driving postion!!!
From this postion the engine, (crank and cam.) rotate CCW.
From the front of the car looking at the engine it would be CW.
If you follow this CCW rotation all the way back though the drive train to the rear wheels it becomes obvious.

Whenever in doubt bump the starter and watch the balancer.

Hmmmm...

If you are standing in front of a GM V8 car like a Camaro, facing the car with the driver's side on your right, the engine turns clockwise as you face the nose of the crank. The torque reaction at the chassis is opposite to engine rotation or counterclockwise so the the left front fender (driver's side) raises and the right drops.

Z28SORR had it correct.

If the cam is driven by a chain it turns the same direction as the crank. If it is gear driven with only two gears (old Chevy inline 6) the cam turns the opposite direction of course. Most gear drives have an idler (or two) to keep the cam rotation the same as the engine.

Other than some sprint cars, where might you find a reverse rotation Chevy V8? It need not be a race engine, but it's often a big block. Why would you do that?

Brit propeller airplanes often turned the engines opposite to US airplanes. Maybe it comes from their driving on the wrong side of the road.

always, there is no such thing as dumb question if you don't know the answer. I guess you can take your pick from the answers.

So whats the norm with transversly mounted engines? I'm serious.

It`s the same. If you could invission twisting the motor and tranny in the engine compartment so the motors in front with the tranny in the rear, the motor would turn CCW from behind the stearing wheel and CW while standing in front of the car.

I'm sure the history of this was written down by someone. But many U.S. standard differ from there Euro. counter part. Prop. rotation seams to be one of them. Also U.S. built helicopter main rotor blades rotate opposite of the rest of the world, with few exception. CCW for the U.S., and CW for everyone else.
Marine engines are usually offered in both CW and CCW versions. Whether they be BB or SB.
