Re: Engine ticking?

you can do a cam swap and replace all of that stuff for cheap if you search around on this board and find some good parts from people for sale (new and used). You can also do the cam swap yourself and save ALOT of money. You can also find every guide you need on this site to swap a cam and do all this work yourself. All you have to do is use the search button and find the stuff your looking for. It can be done. Why dont you first take your engine to someone who builds engines or works on them and atleast get them to tell you what the noise is. They will be able to pick it up right away and im sure wont charge a dime to do so.

Re: Engine ticking?

I have a ticking noise on mine too, I have 155K on my 97Z. When you open the hood you can hear it slightly, more than likely it's the injector pulse. When I close the hood and get in the car I can hear another ticking noise. My guess is it is an exhaust leak since the injector noise is faint. With a high mileage car it's not uncommon for the gaskets to go "bad".

Re: Engine ticking?

Well there shouldnt be that sound, my car has 149k miles, still running perfect no ticking and i got headers, just keep changing your oil and dont be amazingly stupid with your car and it should last you along time, my friends both had their motors go both their cars are 95's, one had 55k on the engine before he blew that and the other had 77k, the ticking could be a loose rr possible, i know with 1.6's sometimes theres an extra tick besides what they make if ones loose is that an idea???

Re: Engine ticking?

on my 93 firehawk, i have a ticking...before i added a cut-out it seem to be relatively quiet, but now with the cut-out, it seems more pronounced. i dont really hear the ticking when i lift up the hood, it almost seems like its coming from under the car if you know what i mean. i cant hear it from inside or the front of the car, but from the side, and behind it, i can hear the ticking.

sorry to hi-jack, but would this indicate a exhaust leak? I am gonna get headers soon anyway..so hopefully this goes away.

Two lifters looked like that. It was a LOUD tapping noise

I didnt think it would make a tapping if there was a hole/leak where the cut-out is. just seems more pronounced with it, the ticking was there, but alot less noticeable, before i put in the cut-out

and you are correct. where the cut-out is welded in, there is a leak, when i start up the car, some moisture seeps through the weld.

Re: Engine ticking?

I have two 1994's one has 29K and the other 32k, both LT-1's have light ticking from the valve cover area. One has 1.6 rockers and the ticking is slightly louder. The ticking seems to be more noticeable just above idle. I think both of these cars have done this since they were new and I have noticed no change over the years. I have had other guys tell me their LT-1 does the same thing. I have checked valve adjustment and it is correct. I think this may be a trait of the LT-1. I can also hear the injectors lightly ticking.

Re: Engine ticking?

But wouldn't a bad lifter, rod, etc... result in bad performance? Is it possible just to have a loud injector tick?

Re: Engine ticking?

If you still have the AIR valves they can also make a ticking noise when they go bad.
