Engine ticking?

Is this normal for LT1's? Even if the hood is shut you can still hear it?

Re: Engine ticking?

Its not normal. It'ss a header leak until proven otherwise. Get fel pro seals cuz the paper ones suck. Make sure the bolts stay tight.

Re: Engine ticking?

I don't have headers... I was told by a friend at school who had a LT1 Z28 and he said his car did the same exact thing at 30k and his friend has one at 130k and it made the same exact noise.

Quote... "LT1's are notorious for that ticking sound"

Re: Engine ticking?

My car was making a ticking sound like it was an exhaust leak, but mine turned out to be a cracked spark plug.Maybe you could look to see if any are arcing.

Re: Engine ticking?

I think your buddy was describing the injector noise.. they are often quoted as "clicking"... if you have a loudly audible clicking...look elsewhere..injectors dont make much noise really.

Re: Engine ticking?

Anytime you get above 115k miles your pushing it on these cars. The sound you are hearing could very well be a piston hitting the head. Sounds very much like an exhaust leak. If you drive your car hard or rev it high you can easily spin bearings and then you start shearing off the crank. I drove mine with this sound for about a month and then the motor seized up.

Re: Engine ticking?

The LT1 was used in police cars and taxi cabs..many of which have 200+K on them.

Re: Engine ticking?

Mine had a tap to it at 50K which i thought was a lifter. But come to find out it was a piston that got hot and cracked. I should of known it wasnt a lifter because the tapping noise was faster than a lifter tap. Could also be a possibility.

After 115k the piston can start hitting the head?

Re: Engine ticking?

But I was told also that lifter tapping can really decrease motor performance. Thats another reason why he was telling me not to worry about anything. I haven't noticed any decreased performance with the car, still pulls real hard through 1st and 2nd. I don't know what to freakin do, I don't want to spend 200$ on lifters and that not be the problem because I don't have 200$ to spend!!

Re: Engine ticking?

EVeryone is leaning towards a lifter for the problem... but the problem is with that, its almost 1k to have it done!! If I do it myself, who knows what i'd break.

If I DO do the Lifters myself, is there anything else I should change while i'm in there to help performance? I want to change my cam, valve springs, pushrods, rr, and Timing Chain... but I was told thats just going to deep into things. What do you think?
