Engine swap LT1 to 3.4L

Hello, I think I have come to the right place to ask this qustion, I learned of TJ Wong here, guy's awesome.
I have a 96 Z28 minus motor & trans that I would like to down size for a daily driver (already have a 02 LS1). Has anyone done this? Pitfalls? Can I use the same wiring harness, computer etc, setup from the LT1 or do I have to pull the 3.4 harness, etc. from another car? Any info would be great you guy's!!

I am not sure I get what you're saying. The LT1 is a 5.7L, NOT a 3.4L. So if you do have a Z28, it definitely doesn't have anything 3.4L in it. That was the standard model. Z28s have LT1s. If you are looking at putting in an LS1, either way you really want to just do a full conversion. It's simpler, and although both are OBDII, you are going to find some compatibility problems.

It would be FAR more cost-effective to just sell the Z and pick up a 3.4/3.8 car. They are DIRT cheap.

Re: Engine swap LT1 to 3.4L

Now that I read this again it does sound confusing, sorry about that.
Let me try again, I have a 95 3.4 camaro complete and a 96 Z28 complete w\o motor and trans. I'm considering putting the 3.4 and trans from the other car into the Z28 for a daily driver. Can I just pull the motor and drop it in the Z28 and plug in to computer and wire harness or do I have to swap that out also?

(What I meant was I also have a 02 Z28 LS1 as one of my toy's.)

Well if you really wanna swap, then just move everything over would be my suggestion. But yeah, that makes much more sense. Good luck with it!

Is the '95 trashed? Why don't you take everything that's nice on the '96 and put it on the '95?

Maybe it's just me, but that sounds easier.

To move the 95 3.4L V6 to the 96 V8 chassis, you would have to transfer the 95's complete front engine/K-member/tranny assembly, PCM and wiring harness. Then you would have to address the pinout differences differences between the 95 3.4L wiring harness and the 96 body connectors. Shoebox has a list of the pinouts on the body connectors by year, so the info is readily available.

Re: Engine swap LT1 to 3.4L

in addition to what the others said, why put a 3.4 into the z and pay the insurance @ z28 prices when you could be paying less with the base model...just another thing to think about

otherwise, I don't see it being a very hard swap since you already have everything. As Fred pointed out, you have to swap basically the whole front end, but this probably makes it easier because you could leave everything connected, drop each motor from the bottom and just roll the entire 3.4 assembly (suspension, wheels, and all) underneath the z, lower the body, and bolt it up.
