Question engine removal

I am getting the head/cam package from lloyd elliot's, and i know that the easiest way to remove the engine is by lowering it, instead of taking it out through the top. Is there anyway that i could take the engine out through the top, or is it way too hard??

Re: engine removal

Might as well take it from the top... since when you put the heads on you'll me taking the alt and intake off. Do that first and I think it'll be much easier from the top.. so Ive heard.

Buy a Happy Hooker from pep boys or auto zone and pull it whole from the top.
Take off the front accessories and balancer outer pulley, unbolt the tranny and support on a jack, take off all wire and lines and pull it with the intake heads and everything else on it and angle the nose to the drivers side as ya are coming out,put it on the stand and take it apart. Put it back together and ya can see the back seal on the intake and get it right for no oil leaks.
When I got mine it was 35-40 dollars and one of those parts houses has it.
BTW it bolts to the top of the intake to pull it Where the 4 bolts hold on the fuel rails. They are small but work every time.

Re: engine removal

After having pulled many engines from cars out the top and having done my 95 out the bottom, I like the bottom removal.

Re: engine removal

on an m6, it's much eaier to pull the motor through the top with trans connected, unless u have a lift. pulling the motor with the t56 connected is really the only way to do it. the input shaft does not like to come out of the motor when you are trying to do this in the car. it took about 30 minutes to pull once the motor mounts were off and everything was out of the way. its only dable with 2 people though. the tranny naturally puts the motor at such and angle to slide right out of the car. the 2nd person can be used to lift the sagging tranny over the front clip of the car so you don't drag it across your paint. it was very simple and very doable with 2 rhino ramps.

your telling this guy to pull the engine from the top because "you already have to take the altinator off" dude that takes like 3 minutes.
i did mine the bottom method and it worked out great for me.

Re: engine removal

i have a 3rd gen and i pulled my motor from the top of course, and i swapped the k-member

the k-member bolts on the same way for 3rd and 4th gens, its 6-8 bolts, dont forget brake lines, and the k-member looks like it makes a nice wheeled engine stand , oh and dont forget the steering shaft

it wasnt terribly hard pulling my motor, but i would definatly go from the bottom with a 4th gen,

just my opinion

Re: engine removal

I just removed my engine from the bottom last week. Its pretty easy, just follow the web site mentioned above. It is going to be put in throught the bottom also. I want to be able to bolt the headers up while the motor is out, I am sick of header leaks. I think this should minimize them.

Re: engine removal

to do it from the bottom without a lift, you will need quite a big garage, a couple jacks, and some will power. it was fairly easy through the top

Re: engine removal

I did mine outside in the driveway. I used a cherry picker (4000lbs). It's a lot easier then people think.
