Engine out the top or the bottom with the trans out?

The advantage of going out the bottom
You can put the whole thing back in ready to run, bolt up the exhaust, hook up some hoses, plug the PCM back in, and a couple electric connectors, and she will start right up. A lot of these things are a bitch to do with the motor in the car. Hell its hard enough to change the spark plugs with the motor in, but when its out, they are a breeze.

I pulled mine out the bottom when the trans was out. I used a furniture dolly so it would support the k-member and give the back of the oil pan a place to rest. I also pulled the fenders and front bumper off so I wouldn't scratch them up, this provided more clearance to get the engine out. I didn't have to disconnect any of the AC stuff. It was also pretty easy putting the engine/transmission assembly back in the car from underneith.
Here's a pic of the assembly before it went back under the car. It was pretty nice being able to fully assemble the engine/trans outside of the cramped engine compartment.

So clarify how you did the drop without disconnecting the ac?
Not trying to hijack just figured my situation was close to the OP being he has some stuff already off the motor.
You can do it without disconnecting the AC, by taking the AC compressor off, and leaving the hoses on, but you will have to remove the alternator, power steering pump, and possibly the accessory bracket, but why, its not hard to recharge it?
Recharging is just another cost lol. How much is it to recharge anyway?
