Emissions or no emissions

Hey dudes, im looking to get some headers in a few days thanks to some Xmas money..

I want to go with Pacesetter LTs and ORY

Now question is.. Should i get emission headers or non emission..?

Also, if you guys can list what else you bought to go with your LT install that would be great

Thank you

Re: Emissions or no emissions

I am about to get some for my car, and I am buying them with emissions fittings and am going to cap the fittings off. That way, if I need the emissions equipment later on down the road, it's there, and I just un-cap it all and hook it up. Last header install I did on a car I ordered a set of stage 8 locking header bolts, that way the header bolts didn't come loose and cause an exhaust leak.

Thats not a bad idea, i guess i'm sol if i move to a place with emissions, oh wait, they prolly wouldn't like the cc306 i have in there either If you go with the pacesetters your going to need to cut your catback and weld or clamp the y-pipe to it, i would recomend welding but if you can't, get one of those wide stainless band clamps, they work pretty well.

Yeah they prob won't like the 306. Are you still at 194k or have you hit 200 yet?

Another thing to get with the install is stock exhaust manifold gaskets. I know that the headers will probably come with gaskets, but I've found that a lot of them leak eventually. The only one that has stood the test of time, is the stock gaskets. You may have to cut them a little to fit, but it's worth it when you consider the time it takes to change a gasket after it starts leaking.

well i just got the cam in before thanksgiving and i had to put it away because of the snow but i prolly have about 500 miles on it and so far so good to 7k multiple times i think i'm around 196k now, not exactly sure, damn close, stock shortblock and the heads have never been off.

Wow, impressive. How do you like the cam? Have you ever driven the car for a daily driven period with the cam in?

Re: Emissions or no emissions

The cam is good from what i remember driving it for a week, haha, my friend put together a pretty good tune for it and there isn't really any cam surge. If its tuned well i would say its perfectly fine for a daily driver, the low end is simular to the stock cam i would say but she really wakes up around 3-4k and pulls strong well past 6k where the stocker has died off well before. when i put it away i could spin the tires in 2nd at over 60 mph, it was only 20 degrees though, lol. Looking for mid/low 12's this spring on a close to 200k mile mill, it doesn't burn any oil and the compression is strong so i'm even tempted to spray it

Re: Emissions or no emissions

wow, thats very very impressive running that big of a cam on a 200k mile engine, im afraid to put something like that in my car that only has 83.

in reply to the original question, i bought Pacesetter LTs with emissions hookups, not sure if im going to run emissions or not myself, but i definitely will not be deleting them unless they delete themselves (break).

Do you live in an emissions regulated state or plan on moving to one in the future? If the answer is yes, then it would be a good idea to get the emissions style headers. The AIR and EGR systems are not going to hurt your performance anyhow. As for additional stuff to purchase, I would get new header gaskets as the Pacesetter ones are crap. I got the Fel-Pro 1406s and they work great. You might also want to look into getting some locking header bolts so you don't have to worry about retightening everything periodically. Also, the Pacesetters are a slip-style system meaning there are no flanges and the y-pipe slips over the header collectors. Pacesetter supplies you with u-clamps to do the job. I, however, spent a little extra change and purchased the 3" band clamps and they sealed everything up perfectly without crushing and distorting the pipes. Finally, but just as important, stock up on a couple cans of PB Blaster to spray down all the old hardware before removal. Hope this helps, Merry X-mas.

I wouldnt run a 200k mile STOCK motor to 7k rpm unless I was trying to intentially break something and yours has a fresh cam swap... hope your luck continues but youre really pushin it. You could tear it down now before the bearings give out and save yourself a lot of machining costs.

Re: Emissions or no emissions

I would agree with getting the fittings and capping them off for later use if needed

Lol, you don't think i know i'm pushing it, haha. I don't really care i guess, i plan on building the lower end this summer, it still has good compression and has 25-30 psi of oil pressure at idle so i would say its still in pretty good shape. hell i'm actually thinking about spraying it this spring, i have a daily driver and i'm rebuilding it anyway so why not see how far it will go
