Post failed emissions

Mass sucks! Yesterday I failed the treadmill test. I had done nothing to prepare
my car because I wasn't expecting the emissions test today - I did emissions
last year and it's every other year. BUT, since I took my car off the road
for the winter and re-registered it in the spring, the rmv computer told the
tech my car needed emissions. I did not know this. Anyway, the car sat for
about 1.5 hours before they stuck in on the treadmill. I should have taken it
for another ride....

HC 2.11 limit 0.80
CO 0.66 limit 15.00
NOX 0.71 limit 2.00

I did go thru the obd test, but since I have a 94 computer it didn't work, and
thus I had to do the treadmill. I am praying someone comes up with a code
patch to pass the obd test, since next year passing the obd test is
mandatory. Of course, if I do pass emissions this year, I won't take my car off the road for the winter, and that will get me two years.

Joe

Damn Joe,
That is a pain. I know how it is. I failed HC's on the roller twice before the guy decided my car was too difficult to drive(4.10's,etc.) and just did an idle test. I'm worried about the OBDII test too even though I have all emissions equip. intact. Still occasionally get EGR SES cuz of the headers, if I leave the test turned on .
God Luck.

Rich,

I think you would pass with just the EGR failing. I'm not quite sure of the laws in Mass, but I read the spec for the PA test, and you can fail up to 2 tests in a certain category (egr was a member) and no tests in another (crankshaft position sensor, for misfires, for example).

That's a relief.
Will they do the OBDII test every year, or just off years?
And, do you have to go on the rollers at any time or are they going away?
I'm probably going bigger on my cam

That sux man. I failed the OBDII test so they put me on the treadmill as well. My car sat cold for at least 1/2 before the test was done while they finished up the car in front of me. The tech told me my O2 sensors were going or perhaps the EGR, I still have to look into that though.

Here are a few of my readings from the OBDII:

Overall Readiness Staus: Fail
Heated O2 Sensor: Not Ready
EGR Flow: Not Ready
O2 Sensors: Not Ready

Here were my numbers from the treadmill:

HC 0.039 limit 0.80
CO 1.53 limit 15.00
NOX 1.88 limit 2.00

The OBD test is every other year, assuming you keep your car on the road year round. The rollers are only a backup for OBD this year - next year you pass or fail on the OBD only. Cars 95 and older will still have to go on the rollers. All my info is coming from the rmv website.

Cool

Well, I've been following your thread on lt1edit.com and see that Ken Kelly is involved in the discussion. Hopefully he can come up with something

man that would be pretty sweet. You could drive in there with a huge cam spewing raw gasoline out the tailpipes at idle, and if the OBD2 test came back ok, they wouldnt bother to test anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for clean air,I contribute to the Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy and a few others, and I have all emissions parts intact. But, I believe that if your car can meet or exceed the guidelines for pollutants using better tuning, then why should you fail on a computer technicality.

you could wire your air pump to pump air in your exaust all the time. buy some of that stuff that you put in your tank to pass emissions.

or do what i do and pay the man an extra $100 bill

a cat wont do much if all or most of the gas is being burned up in the motor before reaching the cat.

was it on TV yet?

I think if it's after the cat you won't have a problem. I've never even had a tech look under my car yet....

I thought that LT's are not an emmisions legal header. So it does'nt really surprise me. I read in MM&FF a while back that with long tube headers you have to put the Oxygen sensor futher back and it picks up slightly cooler readings because its father away and it sets the CPU in cold start up mode which runs slightly richer and thus probaly won't pass the sniffer test.
And did you know that all aftermarket catalyic converters on OBDII cars are not legal in states the have the California stantard of emmisions? RI has it and I'm pretty sure mass. has it. just in case you had them. I talked with the guy's at random technology and thats what they told me.
Give it a tune up and drop the fuel presure a little.Maybe that'll work.
To bad you don't live in RI. I know of some garages that'll put a clean car on the rollers for you and just type in the VIN from your car. The computer will never know. It'll cost you a few extra $$$.

Good Luck,

Mike
