Emissions! Myths or truth
I was talking to a guy at the local speed shop on the phone not to long ago about wanting to do true dual exhaust on my 97. I informed him that I did not need to pass a visual inspection nor was I hooked up to a sniffer test.
He told me that by programing the PCM that I could pass the plug and play emissions test.
For you guys out there With long tubes and no emissions equip.(no EGR no AIR no CATS), or anyone else who knows. Is this true or are they blowin smoke up my ****.
(No pun intended)
Thanks ~Jim~

Re: Emissions! Myths or truth
isn't there a way to program the computer to show a ready status even if the sensor isnt there? could have sworn i read it somewhere, or i might have dreamed it up. let me know
Re: Emissions! Myths or truth
Well heres what I want to do. I want to remove AIR EGR and CATS. But I'm going to put 02 sims for the cats.
Do you guys think I should go the resistor route for the EGR so that I do not have to be in fear of to many " not ready" codes?
Or should I just take it all off face emissions when it comes down to it and go from there.
I appreciate the replies very much.

Re: Emissions! Myths or truth
I am in the socialist republik of Kalifornia and passed with true duals, but
every thing else is smog compliant (cats, air, egr, etc.). Notice I said smog
compliant, not legal. I passed the dyno, plug and play and visual. I'm not
sure why I passed the visual, but I'm not complaining. As long as the air
and egr look like they are there and you pass the dyno and plug and play,
I don't see why you would not pass.

Re: Emissions! Myths or truth
If you turn off all the diagnostic codes relating to EGR, Cats, AIR and 02 the monitors will read ready right away
even if you've removed the hardware.
The PCM commands the tests that have been turned off
so with all tests complete it reads ready.
