electric water pump problem...

I just totally rebuilt a 94 z28. I'm using an electric water pump. got the car running and idleing good. I left it running to check the fluid in the transmission and within 5 mins. the car was in the red on the temp gauge. once it is cool I will check fluid but Im almost positive that it was full I dont see any leaks I'm woundering if the electric water pump is working, I have it hooked up to the ignition fuse. how can I check to see if it is working? I have open headers right now so listening is out of the question.

If you have it wired up to an ignition 12v, you should hear it flowing when you turn the key on with the car not running. You'll hear the water swooshing around in there. It's possible that when you filled your coolant, that there is air trapped in the system which you'll need to bleed out. That could send it in the red pretty quick. Once the air is purged out, then you'll need to top off. There is no light indication on the electric WP's.

it turns out I had a bad relay hooked up with the EWP. fixed it and it comes on with the key on. How do I purge the air out of the system?
Thanks for the help

Air is purged out of the system via bleeder screws. Courtesy of Shoebox: http://shbox.com/1/bleeders.jpg
