Electric Water + Opti Spark = ??QUESTIONS?? have you done one. . .?

Hay wzup people… I have a 94 z28 ( LT1 of course) and water pump recently went bad and I purchased an electric water pump (a Meziere to be exact) and I was decided that I will replace my opti spark (complete Distributor Cap and Rotor ) at the same time. . . My question to you is how do you properly install the opit?? I was looking to save money so that I can purchase my spoiler... I know the water pump is like 6 bolts or so... But I've been hearing horror stories about people installing opti's and having problem with the car starting and things like that. I'm sure a few of you have done this before... Is it worth doing you self and saving the $4 to $500???

*(& yes I’ve searched the boards thanx 4 asking)*

We did Javier97Z28's in about 2-2.5 hours of actual work. Once the water pump is off, unplug all connections/wires (marking them will make life easier), remove the 3? bolts that hold the opti in. Line the new one up with the dowel pin on the cam, give it a little pressure and it will slide in. Just make sure it is seated right...bolt it up, reconnect everything, reinstall everything you just took out and you should be good to go.

Oh, and do this

Im not sure what you mean about having the "car starting" if the battery terminal is unplugged the car shouldnt do anything.

1. Make sure the large drive slot is aligned with the 1 marking on the back of the distributor.
2. Install distributor aligning drive slot with cam dowel pin (dont force may take a couple tries)
3. Once its seated install the three mounting blots and torque to 106 in-lbs.

Reisntall your plug wires and youll be all set. If you have everything already off its not that difficult to do yourself, and depending on how many miles you have it mgiht save another trip down there too.

Buy a relay and some wire. Same thing.

Opti is easy enough to do, just be sure you have a complete opti. To me the way you said it sounds like you have a complete cap and rotor. Its the sensor side that I have always had trouble with.

I've done the same install.

MOST IMPORTANT!!!

You really can't screw anything up UNLESS you install the opti wrong! What I mean is, make sure the dowel lines up when you put the opti on and it just goes in 100% flush, DON'T TIGHTEN ANY BOLTS ON THE OPTI UNTIL IT IS SEATED FLUSH. If you get it in 90% and try and tighten the bolts down to get it flush you'll screew it up. I know ppl who have done this and the car will run like crap since the opti is misaligned...........

I dont have a relay on mine and it works fine so far. Ive heard of more people having problems with the relay than without. I would just wire it to the fuse box that is near the abs under the hood. I went off of the air/cruise fuse, but i dont have ac/cruise on my car anymore. I would try to go off of the ingition fuse if i was you.

I got a 30A relay from Advance Auto and it's been working fine for almost a year.

I installed my first opti when I put my motor together, I was leary as well... However, there is only 1 right way to install the optispark, and it is very obvious if you take your time.

It's pretty rare to have a problem with an actual relay. 99.999% of the time it's going to be a problem with the way the relay was wired up (cold solders, poor crimps, etc).
