EGR problem
EGR problem
what a perfect time for an SES light, when my inspection is due. I can't remember the exact code off the top of my head, but I think it was EGR Flow Insufficient. i cleared it once or twice, can go for a drive and it doesnt always come back. It seems to kick the light back on at low RPM going up a hill, only under certain circumstances. i think it seemed to be when the tranny upshifted into either 3rd or 4th. Is the EGR valve bad maybe? i know there are ways to test it and all, is it relatively inexpensive that i could just replace? seems to be in a tough spot to get, as are most things we these cars.
and my pre-cat O2 is throwing a code on the driver's side (bank 1 sensor 1). I replaced it over a year ago I think for the same code, and now its back. at least im fairly certain it was the same code, low voltage i believe it was. maybe it didnt need to be changed maybe i was misinformed and there is another problem. arg. i hate emissions stuff i wish i could take it off and no one would notice

Re: EGR problem
You need to get the EXACT code..... there are so many different codes for the O2 sensors, and not all of them are caused by faulty O2 sensors.
Sounds like you got P0400 for the EGR.... low MAP change when the system is cycled. It may only happen when pulling up a hill, because that is one of the conditions the EGR is intended to counteract - reduces high combustion chamber temperatures caused by lugging the engine. Could be a faulty EGR valve, no vacuum to the valve due to a cracked hose or stuck solenoid, carbon on the valve pintle or in the passages in the intake manifold, or low exhaust system back pressure. Appears all you have is a catback, so you shouldn't suddenly have problems with exhaust system back pressure.
Just check the codes again... even the EGR can set P0403, and that's a problem with the electrical circuit for the vacuum solenoud.

Re: EGR problem
yeah your right it was p0400.
the O2 thing was P0133. ive thrown a couple O2 codes since i did my headers a few years ago. bad sensor on the passenger side, another was for a leak that i didnt weld good before the cat.

Re: EGR problem
You're getting the PO400 code because you installed headers. The headers allow the exhaust to flow too freely and doesn't create enough backpressure to send exhaust gasses to the EGR. Here is an interesting link:

Re: EGR problem
hmm that is indeed an interesting link. i knew people have deleted their EGR and I couldnt not remember if it was something that could be programmed out of the PCM to keep it from throwing a code. The trick with deleting it and fooling the computer so there is no SES AND u pass emissions is neat. i like it. i just suck with electronic stuff and im so busy anymore. i could probably do it if i had the time and depending on how detailed my books are with diagrams and such.
Is the EGR on the back of the intake manifold? or was that something else i was looking at in my chiltons
