EGR Malfunction??

What does an EGR Malfunction mean? I had my SES light come on, ran the code, it was EGR Malfunction. I cleared it, then 2 weeks later (today) it came back on. Does anybody know what this means and what do I have to do? Thanks for your time.

What was the specific code and description... there are codes for both the EGR valve and the EGR solenoid. Each one is a different problem. The 96 and newer LT1's had a recall for the EGR valve.... has this been done on your car?

you know.... I'm not sure if that has been done, I bought it about a year ago and back then I didn't know anything about these cars, but I bet it hasn't. I'm gonna have to look into it. As far as the exact code, I don't have it right now. Thanks for the help man, I appreciate it.

Call a dealer and give them your VIN. They should be able to pull the records and see if any recall applies and has/has not been done.

Thumbs up EGR MALFUNCTION PO400

when i let my car,let her warm up for a minute
or 2, depending on the temp, she drives fine, holds the idle nice, around 600 rpm's

but when i just let her run for about 10 to 20 sseconds and put her in drive, it feels as when i'm driving the car that she is surging but the rpm's are reading steady and when i come to a stop quick the will dive down to 500 rpm's and then go back up to 900 rpm

I found out this past weekend that it was my egr valve malfunctioning..........going to take it to ls1 to have them remove it and reprogram it out of the computer..........
just figured i pass this imfor on.........
WON'T EFFECT EMMISIONS

Not sure why you feel it "won't effect (sic) emmisions (sic)"..... you will see an increase in NOx production in operating conditions that include lugging the engine at low RPM in low gear, for example. These conditions are included in the I/M240 and other "rolling" emissions drive cycles, as far as I am aware.

I might be going out on a limb here fred, but i had this done about 2 weeks ago on my car, had the egr removed & had it taken out of the pcm, the car runs great, no surging or stummbling............... when you come to quick stop

Now if the state where i live in did the sniffer test then yes i would
have replace the egr unit, but they don't. they just get there reading from pcm in the car.......................

Then you should have said:

"Does not affect emissions testing, when all they do is hook up to the PCM".

In fact, it does affect emissions, and this can be picked up with a rolling dyno drive cycle test. Absence of EGR does NOT mean you will fail such a test, only that it will affect emissions levels. A car with a well tuned engine and a healthy cat should easilly pass emissions testing.

If your EGR was leaking, it is only common sense that removing it helped your car run better, but the same thing could have been accomplished by simply replacing the faulty valve.
