EGR Code HELP!!!

Hey guys, I've got a 97 SS I've been having an EGR code coming back for a few months now and I'll reset the light and then after a few rides it will be back. The dealer said that the EGR valve seems to be working ok and that I should try replacing the EGR solenoid. I didnt want them to hit me up with their $80 an hour labor rates without a guarantee that it will be fixed. Has anyone had this problem??? I found where the EGR valve is located but i dont know where the solenoid is, if anyone can shed some light on the situation it would be a big help. Thanks guys

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

On the EGR Valve on the back of the manifold there will be a vaccuum line. Trace the line back a few inches to a black plastic square. From the black square you should be able to trace another vac. line to the manifold. The square is your solenoid. Here is a pic.

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

if you are able, take the egr valve off and clean it and the opening of the intake. Sometimes excess carbon buildup will cause the valve to not open or close. Other than that, I would change solenoid first not valve.

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

i had kind of the same thing. my egr solenoid and canister solenoid which are connected to the same fuse under the hood were setting off codes. turns out when i had my alarm/remote start they installed it inline with this fuse and sometimes it will trigger a code for some reason. i too had the the dealer check it all out and they said both solenoids were working fine. i would just send your pcm over to ion at madz28.com and have him delete the code.

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

Ive been having that same exact problem with my car. I work at an auto parts store so I have been looking all the parts up to fix it, but since my car isnt running bad or doing anything unusual, I just deal with it. I dont feel like spending hundreds to turn the light off. But if you do figure it out and the light goes off, holla at me and let me know how you fixed it, I'd be interested to know. Thanks, Tyler

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

My EGR on my '97 set a code and I replaced it. Mir told me about a Tech bulletin on EGR's and found a copy for me. I turned in the receipt at the dealer and GM warrantied the failure about 1 yr after the car warranty had expired so I got my money back. I was a very happy camper.

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

Since the PCM is not connected to the EGR valve, seldom is the EGR valve the cause of the EGR fault. It's usually in the device the PCM is connected to or the wiring to that device.

Re: EGR Code HELP!!!

Good point. I don't think I can do anything under the hood without somehow managing to unplug the vacuum line to the egr solenoid and causing it to set a code.
