Assuming the EGR valve isn't leaking, and the AIR checkvalves are operating properly, you will likely see NO benefit from removing that stuff from the car other than a cleaner engine bay.

EGR actually HELPS performance at part-throttle during cruising, by re-using some of the spent exhaust gas in the combustion chamber, thereby reducing chamber temps, reducing the tendency to knock, and allowing for increased timing. This helps performance and fuel economy while cruising.

The EGR system does not function above 70% throttle though, so that's why I say you won't notice a benefit.

The AIR system is there to inject air from the air intake tract into the catalytic converters to help get them up to proper operating temp faster. That pump only runs for like 3 minutes, or until the car goes into closed loop I believe, so you're not going to see a performance benefit there either.

I just removed my EGR and AIR stuff because I installed headers that don't have the fittings for that stuff.

What do you need to remove it? If you're running the stock manifolds, you'll need bolts to plug the fittings on the tops of the manifolds for the AIR. You'll need a set of blockoff plates to plug the manifold at the y-pipe where the EGR tube exits the manifold to go to the intake, and you'll need a plate (or the existing plate with coke can and some RTV to make a block-off) for the intake end of that same tube.

As for the AC, I can't tell you of any benefits other than less drag on the engine, and slightly lighter weight...Oh, plus the benefit of a hotter interior in the summer.

Hope this helps.

The benefits of removing the AC are two fold in my opinion.
1. You will gain ALOT of room to work on the car.
2. You will lose a good amount of weight off the front end of the car.
If you live in a part of the country that gets very hot during the summer and you drive the car everyday you may regret it.
I pop the tops out and go but I never have liked AC on my hot rods and I have gotten used to it.

Remove EGR and you'll help with heat on the intake manifold -- the kind that causes the infamous oil leak.

the room gained is the best thing about removing the air and ac. the ac weighs 40 pounds total but one can only get at 27 pounds easily because the other 13 is part of the heater box. it can be taken out through the interior of the car and cut in half and patched up, but thats hell to do.

the air system is prob around 10 pounds in weight. if you still have your cat you will need the air pump or the cat will die or clog up. but if dont have a cat get rid of it. that thing takes up a bunch of room.

egr isnt worth comming out unless your back there or the egr valve broke. weighs about a pound if that.

I thought the air system, like on other cars, was there to help burn unburnt fuel, add oxygen to hot not totally burnt exhaust fumes so that it'll burn up before reaching the cats, on a start up period to help the cats not to get clogged....?

But I could be wrong.....

i should have been more specific...i am soon getting long tubes, and yes i need room and to take off some weight...if i order my hooker LT's without the air or egr will my SES light come on? maybe when i take off the stock manifolds and all the air/egr stuff i can just leave it off?? also to take off the a/c stuff, what is there to take off, any diagrams or websites?? do i need any special brackets or a shorter belt?

Dan, I could be wrong about the purpose of the AIR system, but I spoke from what my understanding of the system is.

pwrtripta: If you have an ODBI (93-95) car, you'll probably NOT get an SES light by removing the AIR or EGR. If you have an OBDII (96+) car, you will get the light unless you have that stuff programmed out of the PCM.

If you're going with long tubes, you'll need the LT4 EGR valve block off plate, and you can cut the EGR tube and use a coke can to make the other block off plate you'll need. That saves you a few bucks there. If ordering true Hooker LT headers, there is NO provision for the AIR or EGR stuff, but the Jet-Hot brand LT headers have those fittings as an option. Me, I would go without the fittings unless you need to pass emissions or something.

Maybe someone here can help you with the removal of the air conditioning stuff...

Good luck!
