ECM code 42, opti?
All you had to do to avoid taking the Opti off was look at Shoebox's code list:
DTC 42 = Ignition Control (IC) circuit (shorted or grounded circuit)
There is no way the high voltage section of the Opti (cap/rotor) would cause that code. There is a fairly detailed logic diagram in the factory manual for finding the problem indicated by DTC 42, which can be caused by:
-faulty connection on the white wire from the PCM to the ICM
-grounded IC circuit between PCM and ICM
-faulty ICM
-faulty circuit on various connections to the ICM
-faulty PCM

Ummmm....OK, It says in my manual what a 42 is, it also says to clear the code and drive the car and if it does not come back it is an intermittent problem.
The spare distributor cap fixed it, or so I think. Runs great! I just drove it 20 miles kinda hard...seemed ok. But I will take a spare ICM with me to the track tomorrow.
I am going for my lifelong goal tomorrow, 10.90 in an all motor pumpgas streetcar. Wish me luck.

Either way it seems ok, and thanks for the input.

Good luck
you have any after market ignition stuff? msd box or anything?
I have never used one and never had an opti problem....Only time I replaced on was when I had a small fire
been 10 years and alot of RPM

Good to hear it's running OK again. Make sure all the ground wire terminals are tight there on the coil/ICM studd.
I have a MSD 6A and didn't notice any cap/rotor issues the last time I had everything apart.
How is the weather down your way in Bama, or LA to be more exact? Here in the midwest (Ed Wright country) we've got some snow and ice. And, what track are you headed to?
