ecm changing

wasnt sure if this would goto the ecm diagnostics or here but... i have a 94 z28 automatic, took it to the chevy dealer for a diagnostuic check came back with
no injector pulse. Quad driver failing;
pcm (power control module) fault: to replace pcm and program and recheck system $331.59 +tax

my step mom has a 94 z28 auto convertible would there be any problems to pull hers out and put it in mine and see if that fixes it? are they compatible? would it cause any problems with her computer? any other info needed .. let me know ... thanks

Re: ecm changing

So why did you take it for a diagnostics check to begin with---were you having problems? If it ain't broke...

Should be no problem to swap in the PCM, but if there is no marked improvement in performance, what would be point?

Just for the heck of it, take your car to autozone and have them run a check on it to see if they give you the same results.

BTW, for that money, you could send in your old pcm and get another one with a tune for less than that. JMHO

Re: ecm changing

I thought the last year the ECM had a "quad driver module" was 1993. Not used in the 94 and up PCM's.

Re: ecm changing

well.. its running really bad .. hesitations and a pinging noise... seems like a fuel or spark problem... i got tired of messing with it so to the dealer it went..

the diagnostic reported that the ecm was bad .... so i wanted to put hers in cuz i know its fine, and wanted to see if it helps mine out.. hers runs fine and everything the check engine light is not on ... so the autozone thing wouldnt do naything ... we have an auto xray 5000 or soemthing it wouldnt show any codes.. so i called the dealer they said they can probably find it... so i went ahead and did it..

and about the sending in old ecm thing... would it matter that mine is possibly bad?

the main reason for this thread was to see if there would be any problem with putting hers in mine for 5 minutes to see if it makes my car run normal again, then i will know for sure if its the ecm...

but i also dont want to mess her car up..

Re: ecm changing

When you want to know about codes, you need to get the exact code numbers and post them. People are forever jacking around with code descriptions that are in error.

If you had no injector pulse, you could not have driven it to the dealer. The dealer might not be entirely forthcoming.

I don't think it would be a problem to swap PCMs since they are both the same year and both automatics.

Re: ecm changing

i think its being misunderstood...
the car is running badly, really bad hesitations and a ticking type sound coming from front... the check engine light is not on. the auto xray5000 that my dad has said no trouble codes found.
i called the dealer to ask them what there diagnostic check did, they said it will tell them more then just codes that get stored.. i switched the computers from the 2 cars, drove it aorund the block same problem, so that obivously means that their 'fix' of ecm needs replaced is incorrect, right?

the no injector pulse and the quad driver thing are what my receipt said were the problems that they gave me, and the fix is a new ecm.. they will put a new ecm, program it, and re run a diagnostic check for ~$320.. but that is not the problem my car is having correct? im sorry, i am very bad at explaining things..

if it will help, after i get off work i can stop at my dads house and hook the scanner up to the car and write down all the info that it tells... it tells alot of stuff... i just dont know the positions they are supposed to be at to know if they are wrong..

my brother knows a pretty good amount about cars, and he said if he had to guess he would say a spark problem... i know the scanner tells the spark advance... what is the normal range for that to be? i can get a reading tomorrow around 5 EST

Scanner readings courtesty of Injuneer.

Does not sound like a computer problem, since you swapped it with another and the same thing is occurring. Try to track down the ticking sound. It may be a plug wire arcing.

Re: ecm changing

well, i finally got to messing with it a little more ... bought a fuel pressure tester ..
with it hooked up turn key to on to pressurize it is at 40 PSI
with car on and the vacuum line disconnected from the fuel pressure regulator its about 43-44 PSI
shut car off it went down to about 35 PSI

im looking at shoebox' page.. great info ive used it on more then a few occasions

any suggestions / info on this? anything else i should do? were pretty sure it is either spark or fuel ... didnt see any arcing at all.. climbed under it at night and everything..

also ive ran the car out of gas 3 times in the 3 years i have had the car... one when i first bought it, cuz of the gay guage design .. last 2 were a little more recent... one a few months before this happened. the last one was probably less then a month before the car was acting up..

Re: ecm changing

Check your coil wire too, it will make a ticking sound if it is loose but it will sound like it is coming from the opti some how. Mine was very loose a while back and took me forever to track it down. I check all the plugs and what not but forgot about the coil wire!
