tensioner going bad?

My serpentine belt sometimes moves rearward one rib on the crank hub...this has destroyed one rip of the belt so far--for the time being I just carry around a 13mm wratchet and move it when I notice it has moved back again. I just recently drove it 200 miles consistently under 3000 rpm, never going WOT. However, when I really get on it, the belt skips a rib. The tensioner feels good to me, but that isn't a very accurate measure of it. Is it going bad? Is there a torque spec a new tensioner should require to move it?

If your losing a rib it sounds like the pullies are not alighned properly. Has the crank hub been off recently or anything?

It has never been off even though it has been removed more than 10 times...not to say it didn't move this time. But how does the crank pulley change position? It's press-fit AND has three bolts securing it to the hub!

Check the crank pulley for a broken rubber ring. The pulley is also the "damper" and consists of an inner and an outer ring, held together by a hard rubber ring. If the ring is deteriorating, the outer ring of the pulley can wobble. Grab the pulley hard on one side and see if it will move.

I'm confused and can't seem to find these "rings" you speak of.

Where are they, are you talking about some rings between the balancer hub attached to the crankshaft, or something on the harmonic balancer itself? I always thought the pulley was just a chunk of metal, with no rubber or anything on it......I seem to be ignorant.

Re: tensioner going bad?

There's a black line representing the inside diameter of the pulley, and right outside it, another black line representing the seam where the inner and outer rings meet. The rubber ring is inside the two pieces.

I'm not understanding.. you said never been off but then says been off 10 times. Also I meant have you had the hub off it is pressed on and if you didnt get it pressed all the way back on serpentine could be out of alignment.
