Re: Dyno #'s after a CAM tune.

$400 for 11rwhp aint bad...
and considering its a tune on a stock car... thats even better.

santore
It wasn't a stock car it had a CC305

Maybe it was a mustang dyno??? However those would acually be really good numbers for a mustang dyno lol.... I just think the thing needs a good pair of headers.
Edelbrock headers aren't that bad! I had them, went from those to a longtube and pickedup .07 when I was doing the EFI shootout almost weekly! 7 hundreths!!! I would love to see a before/after dyno longtubes vs. shorties. its not as bad as people make it out to be

His dyno is a dynojet

Flechette: don't know how to respond that. Given the norm that your 93 would probably put down between 230-240 RWHP through an A4 stock, I am surprised that you gained nearly 100 RWHP with a Hotcam, CAI and shortie 1 /58 headers and untuned. JMHO
My car had a mail order tune in it at the time! Before the tune it went a 13.20 after it went 12.90's and like I said it was just a mail order tune! I don't know where your looking but I would expect a 305 cam to out dyno a hotcam. I think I can honestly say I've never seen a LT1 with headers and a camshaft larger than a CC304 do less than 319! The original author here has a 6 speed too you got to remeber that also

You know.. There are some 93's out there that are factory freaks.. I know of one with shorties roller rockers and a M6 that put down 294 or so... So it is possible, but highly unlikely. The more logical reason for this would probably be that the dyno was lying. It is possible for the owner of the dyno to set it up so that it reads high.. Mike Morgans dyno out here used to be the biggest lying dyno of them all (when he owned it, and Im sure pleanty of people here know Mike Morgans rep, so it will make sense to them) I went to Mike Morgans (it had been sold to Todd Smith and been renamed to Strictly Dyno at this time) dyno to attempt to dynotune my car on the old motor. The thing was running lean as hell and the tuner sent me home to fix the problems (Friend of mine) Once I fixed the problems, I re-dynoed the car on the same dyno and it netted me 363rwhp. I then took it to another dyno shop that I have been to MANY times, and it suddenly dynoed 340. Weather and temp were very similar and elevation about the same, so you cant say that that was the cause.. It was the dyno lying to me. 20hp lost because of the dyno setup.

Thats probably where the 330 rwhp from the 93 came from, and its possible that the dyno that this thread starter dyno'd at usually reads low.

Anything at this point is possible... Too many variable to pinpoint the exact reason.. I personally think that 11rwhp for a $400 dyno tune that made the car run better is an awesome deal. Its all about streetablility..

Also let me propose this... Say he only made another 11rwhp peak, but picked up a solid 10-15% increase throughout the entire power band? Would it be worth it then? Esp if the car is running better than ever before?

Peak numbers give guys with small *****'s bragging rights, but average numbers is where its at!

Good job on those numbers... Get some longtubes and get back on the dyno!

Oh, yeah! One more thing.. I made that 363rwhp/340rwhp with the edelbrocks.. they are not as bad as everyone claims.. They actually do a pretty decent job.. But I will agree that LT's are definatly TONS better!

ok Im done now!

Re: Dyno #'s after a CAM tune.

I live in Raleigh and had my car dynoed at CAM before I did my cam swap (haven't had a chance to get back over there for the new numbers) But on a stock tune with MAC 1 5/8 headers, hollow cat, flowmaster, CSI water pump, Moroso CAI, 1.6 RR's my numbers were 287.1 HP and 331.2 TQ. I do see you have JE forged pistons. What Compression ratio are you running with your setup? I just installed a cc502 and I played with the tuning myself and then I got a MADZ28 tune I also installed a 52mm TB so we'll see how much she's putting out now Although I'm not real happy with my BLM's with this BBK so I'm going to try the TB mod and see if it fixes it, if not I'll throw the stocker back on and sell this thing on ebay

I'll take that bet, been there done that now pay me. I made 383 HP with Ions tune and 414 with Jeffs (+31so I would bet that it is nearly imposible to out tune another tuner when the other guy is using a dyno. Ion is a great tuner who I have used several times and he has always done great work but since I live in the Southeast it is a little hard to have him dyno tune my car. Jeff does quality work and I don't think because a car doesn't put down the numbers you think it should you should be flaming him. There are way to many factors involved with the motor other then just the tune that affect HP including the Cats that the owner mentioned, or even a bad valve adjustment. The rate of $400 for a dyno tune is posted on his web site and that is what he paid for and thats what he got. I am sure if he would have asked, CAM would have been more then glad to trouble shoot the car for what ever the normal shop rate is. I can also say that the $400 is $150 cheaper then the other tuner I considered, More performance, so the price is not out of line,

And to add to that, Jeff will do updating to the program for as long as you own the car.

Re: Dyno #'s after a CAM tune.

After talking to several peple that have gone to CAM and had problems while dynoing (which Jeff helped to find the problem while at his shop), the originator of this thread must not have asked for help. Jeff is very sharp... if he isn't why would people be paying him to go to the west coast to tune their cars? In fact, we called Jeff after having some trouble with my car (and he does not know me personally) and he was willing to help.

I think the numbers may be a bit skewed by the way Jeff's dyno reads. Taking a look at your numbers, they seem about spot on when compared to my car which was also dynoed at CAM. My mods at the time were Mac midlengths, moroso cai, and a magnaflow muffler. This was through a cat as well. I put down 278rwhp and a best of 314rwtq. The chart can be seen on my cardomain page. Granted I dont have a full catback, it looks like the rockers and water pump gave you a nice increase over what I have.

A lot of guys here wiht the bolt ons are dynoing ~290-300rwhp.

Maybe Jeff's dyno just reads relatively low when compared to others?

I won't get involved in any madness about this particular member's results but I will vouch for Jeff's work. I am one of the "West Coast" guys and he worked miracles with my car. I had a mail order tune from one of the best in the country for 2 years and was very pleased but I always wanted a true dyno tune, so I had Jeff re-do it. First of all, the least important thing to me was to increase HP. I was already making decent power (462 blower & 592 n2o) but I wanted the motor tuned for driving at other than WOT and I wanted the "cam" tuned.

What I ended up with, besides the power increases as shown in my sig, was a much, much, much better driving car. One of Jeff's "specialties" is tuning below WOT, for everyday driving. I have virtually ZERO cam surge and can drive it at 5-10 mph in first gear without bucking at all! My car had plenty of pure power before and ran a 11.xx (lousey driver) at 131, easily a 10 second car with someone who can drive !! but there was no way I could get away with driving that slow in stop and go traffic without bucking my teeth loose (okay, slightly exaggerating). It was not tuned down low. It was not friendly or comfortable out of it's power band. That demands a tune on the dyno and someone who really knows their sh*t.

Anyway, there's way more to a tune than peak numbers and I am merely adding my vote of confidence for Jeff and what he does. I am a diehard Milkfan !

So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Re: Dyno #'s after a CAM tune.

Yes I told Jeff to go ahead with the tune even though I had a bad cat. I Knew it was going to cost me some horsepower but like it was said before as soon as I get it fixed jeff will update my tune. I am very happy with my car right now the 400 I spent was well worth it. And there were only four pulls because evidently he knows what he is doing. The 311/333 was the third pull. The fourth was actually higher hp I believe 314 but it was so peaky that we decided to go with the previous tune which was a lot flater. So average gain over peak gain Ill take that any day. I am a "milkfan"

Sure, its understandable that you'd want a dynotine to pull the most drivability. After all, you have a blower/N2O. All this guy has is a cam, and a small one at that. The 10+rwhp that's been left on the table can't be written off to drivability considering his modifications.

AGAIN, I'm not responding to the debate regarding the original poster's results ... I'm making a statement of my results for those "lactose intolerants" who highjacked the thread to post their negativities

Re: Dyno #'s after a CAM tune.

It comes down to paying $400 for 11rwhp when much more was achievable. The initial poster finally did mention that he asked 'milkman' to dynotune even though his cat/s were bad, which probably explains why he only saw an 11rwhp gain. Id still go back and have him re-tune after replacing/removing the cats.

Jeff is pretty damn good. When it comes to tuning, I wouldnt let anyone else get near my car.
He's also very helpful as well, no matter when you call him or what you ask him.

Says who? You? If he had a problem ELSEWHERE (low numbers) how does that become the dyno TUNER's responsibility?
