Question Dumb auto tranny question

Hey guys, I was just wondering what automatic transmission came in the 1995 Z28s. I can't determine whether it is the 4L80E or the 4L60E. Also, how much would it cost me to have it rebuilt at a decent shop?

I'm pretty sure it's the 4L60E.

Definatley a 4L60-E. I had a shift solenoid go out in my 96 T/A. Had to have the whole tranny rebuilt by my GM dealer witch cost me about $1,800 parts and labor. Those dang things aren't cheap! Good luck!

There's rebuilds and there's rebuilds. The skill of the rebuilder is important as well as the components used. What you should do depends on your budget, how you use the car, and how long you plan to keep it, and what is wrong with your existing tranny. The first question is the one I listed last: maybe it really doen't need to be completely rebuilt. OTOH, once it's out and apart if you are going to put a lot of miles on the car it makes sense to have it completely rebuilt.

A good independent shop is almost always the best bet, but it needs to be good. Otherwise, you might be best off with a dealer (shudder!). Depends who is in your area. But a good warranty (from someone who will be there) is important if it's a daily driver.

Just curious, how do you change a shift solenoid. Also, how can you you tell which shift solenoid is which?

You got lucky and caught it early! If you don't catch it early and keep driving it (and you may not even know it's a problem till it's too late), you WILL burn the clutches out & need a full rebuild. I just don't like when people automatically ASSUME that because one fix worked for them, the same fix works for everybody with similar problems. I'm in the business, I know. I'm not ragging on you, but to say he got screwed by GM or a tranny shop without knowing all the details is just ignorant.
PS. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.....you may need a rebuild soon too!
