To dual or not to dual
To dual or not to dual
Hey I have a stock LT1 besides jethot longtubes and ramair, now I bought a 3 inch universal Dr. Gas X-pipe system from a friend for 90 bucks brand new never used. I have two 3" high flow cats that I bought for 110 for both as well and was wanting to use sweet thunder chambered mufflers but I think I would have to route the exhaust under the axle to fit those mufflers and at this point I just want to clear the never ending "to do" list Ive had for this car since I bought it and dont want any problems to arise out of this exhasut system. I obvioulsy dont need dual 3" exhaust but it was so cheap I jumped on it and now Im not sure I can do it the way I really want without many possible problems for my daily driver thats been open longtubes for about 1 year
. In my case would you guys recommend spending the money having a muffler shop go ahead and piece together the 3" duals and going under the axle? Or maybe get a hooker Y pipe and having the rest fabbed up with some chambered mufflers, which creates a new dilemma... the chambered mufflers have 2.5" crimps which would be very restrictive having the motor run through only one so Ill need 2... maybe have a y in the I pipe and put 2 there then Y them back together before the axle? how would you guys have it done while not spending rediculous amounts of money???

Re: To dual or not to dual
I would say the best thing to do would be to stick to the 3 in duals. Where the pipes go over the axle, step down to a 2.5 in pipe, and use 12 or 18 in bullets. I could be wrong, but i remember reading that stepping down to go over the axle actually helps with exhaust efficiency. I think it's because the exhaust has cooled by that point, and the smaller diameter increases velocity. But, like i said, i could be wrong. Good luck, she has to sound mean.
Re: To dual or not to dual
well your cheapest way would be to just run the muff.s and dump them before the axle. if you have the money, then make the pipes go down to 2.5" over the axle like suggested. mount the muff.s at the rear bumber. only problem w/that way is one its expensive due toall the fabwork, and two the muff.s will be visible, so you'll have to get the smallest/best looking muf.s you can afford. personally, goin under the axle just doesnt look right. but it will get the job done cheaply. if you do go that route, buy some of those ball and socket colectors so you can easily disconnect it when servicing.

Re: To dual or not to dual
yeah I really want those chambered mufflers which are like bullets but sound much better and the shortest they make are 18" and they are loud, but considering I have been open longtubes for a year nothing is loud to me anymore except my car. Any other opinions?
Re: To dual or not to dual
dang....open lontubes for a year is crazy. Don't your neighbors complain? By Neighbors I mean anyone within a 5 mile radius as loud as that must be.
Since your so worried about exhaust flow and performance and dont wanna spend a ton I would just do dumps before the axle. Or you could just try and sell your 3 inch stuff and pick up all 2 1/2 inch piping and xpipe and try and go over the axle. Another option would be to do just a regular y-pipe setup with an electric exhaust cutout after the ypipe so you can have your performance on demand.

Re: To dual or not to dual
I would just dump it before the axle but that wont pass inspection around here. BTW when the dual 2.5" pipes go over the axle do they both go over on hte passenger side or do you have to move all that crap on the drivers side to put em over?
Re: To dual or not to dual
ive seen it done both ways. but the way they are split I would never be happy with due to it always hitting the panhard bar over bad bumps. also, alot of poeple have deleted the bar above the panhard bar so Im sure you could do w/o it to make room for the pipe. maybe even fab up a new brace that goes alot closer to the floor pan to make room.

Re: To dual or not to dual
sweet I didnt know you could remove that without an adverse effect on handling but now that I look at it I wonder why its even there... I will take it off and the tunnel brace and go up to an exhaust shop and see what I can do.... BTW Patriot, do you think 3" duals will go over both sides with that bar removed?

Re: To dual or not to dual
Not that it helps you, but dual 2.5s will fit over the axle on the
passenger side (stock location). You may need to relocate the
fuel lines if you run a pipe on the drivers side. Just depends on
how comfortable you are with a hot exhaust pipe right next to
your fuel lines.

Re: To dual or not to dual
Im getting my car back today at 4pm. Hooker LT's, H-pipe, sweet thunder 18" mufflers, and turndowns, all 3"
I see absolutely no reason to spend the extra money with true duals to go all the way over or under the axle. It really makes no sense to me.
Ill get a video of it for you if you are interested in how it sounds. I can send it to ya tonight
