Driving with y-pipe open

Is it ok for me to drive my car for about 40 minutes to a muffler shop to have some of my exhaust pipe welded up if it is flowing just out of the y-pipe of my AS&M headers? I don't know of any shops in the Katy area that would do exhaust work on a car without cats but this one place that is that far away. Would it hurt my car? I know it will be loud as hell but that is about the only option I have at this point.

I ran with just a 3" dp on my conquest. That was LOUD. Shouldn't be a problem, just go straight there. Lots of people run open long tubes to their exhaust shops, I wouldn't worry about it.

It will be loud with just y pipe but it won't hurt anything.

Re: Driving with y-pipe open

I don't have headers, but I did that all day today before I made it to the muffler shop around 4pm. It was a little loud and it got a little warm inside the car, but it was fine.
I do have to say that I was a little disapointed after I put the bullet on. It was a tad quieter than the open Y pipe was.

Re: Driving with y-pipe open

I drove for 4 months with an open Y pipe on stock manifolds becuase my cat clogged up. Drove for 3 days with open long tubes. The open Y pipe on stock manifolds won't hurt anything, but running open headers for a long time can (very rarely) damage your exhaust valves though.

Re: Driving with y-pipe open

I drove my car about 150 miles back to college with open headers and didnt hurt anything, so open Y-pipe should be fine.

open y-pipe shouldn't be a problem. this is true that rarely exhaust valves are damaged, however, how many people drive around daily open headers on an LT1? After talking to a one of the performance shops I go to, damage to exhaust valves is not all that uncommon if you plan to drive open headers often. For this reason, I opted to put my cutout after the Y pipe.

Yea, you will be fine - I just wanted to throw that info out there from a guy that does a lot of work like this - I have a feeling though most that go there build race cars, so there is most likely more to it than just simply cruising open headers.

Re: Driving with y-pipe open

I did end up driving with the open y-pipe to the exhaust shop about 40 mintues away. Talk about a little mini massage!! That thing vibrated so bad on the freeway and made everyone stare.. I got it all welded up with a bolt in ORP so if I want to eventually bolt in a cat down the road...
