Drilling cam on 93 Camaro to fit new style Optispark?

Hi guys,

I have a brand new, like 30 miles, optispark that i want to salvage from my 96 impala engine, which spun a bearing. I picked up a 93 camaro/t56 combo package for a steal and I'm trying to figure out exactly what i need to do to get it to work.

In the future i might just swap out my intake and swap in a new stock cam, but in the mean time, what is a good quick and dirty fix to get my opti to fit?

I've read that you can drill the cam in the 93 and swap out the timing gear, along with the timing cover. Is this true? If so, what size drill bit do i use, and how far do I have to drill in?

You would want to pull the cam and have a machine shop do the precision work needed for the hole, so you might as well just swap the cam. I wouldn't even think about trying to drill it on the engine with a drill bit. No way you would get it like it should be.

hole: .500"dia. X 1.0625" deep

A 95 timing cover fits the vented opti and has no crank sensor hole to deal with.

Thanks shoe, that is what i figured.

i guess i'll keep driving on the 93 til it completely craps out and then just do a full camswap. the engine has 90k miles on it, so its probably a good idea for a refresh at some point in the near future.

...or it will just be your "bad" luck that you get one that lasts over 300k (like other's have).
