Question is dowel pin length critical????

i just put everything back on after the hotcam install. just have a few things left to hook up. my question is if the cam dowel length is critical??? i had both cams side by side and marked the length off on the hotcam. i used a dremel to cut it down to the mark. i put them side by side again and the seem pretty much the same length. i know there is a specific # of the height of the dowel +- .01 or something like that. but does is really need to be perfect?? can someone explain why it even matters? ive been trying to figure it out. i mean the dowel just goes through the cam gear, so why is it so important that it needs to be a specific length?? if someone can help me out i would really appreciate it! thanks!

As long as the dowel does its job and doesn't hit things, length is not critical.
