It will work either way - if the dots are in opposition or apposition.

With the LT1 when the dots are 6 and 12, the opti is firing #6 cylinder. When 12 and 12, number 1 is getting the juice.

It's not only the LT1,most all engines are like that that have a chain and two sprockets.

The last non LT1 engine I assembled, a BBC same firing order, I set the sprockets at 6 and 12. When I installed the distributor I put the #1 plug wire to where the rotor was pointing on the cap. It fired up, what I am missing?

You tell me.

If they are 12-12 that's OK if they are 6-12 that's OK too.

What way was the rotor pointing. Ya can put the dist in and the wires in any order of rotation, but if ya knew which way the rotor points when it's on #1 and ya put it in on six then it would be 180 out.12-12 is #1 and the rotor is pointed to the back of the carb on the passengers side corner.
