Question Does the Opti-Spark control FI Pulse?

Hooked up "Noid" testers to the FI's, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I just replaced the motor with a JASPER rebuild and it runs like garbage at idle & low RPM's. When the RPM's get over like 12-1300 it seems to run much better, BUT the noids do not agree. We replaced the cap & rotor supplied with the Jasper install kit, but I re-used my original Opti (seemed fine, even with the high miles). That's the only thing that I can think of. How do you test the Opti? Thanks.

Re: Does the Opti-Spark control FI Pulse?

The Opti provides the cam position signal that allows the PCM to calculate when to fire the sequential injectors. The pulse width is calcualted in the PCM, from the mass air flow, the target A/F ratio and the long term fuel corrections.

The cam position is determined from the low resolution pulse pattern, produced by the optical sensor in the back half of the Opti..... the part you didn't change.

OMG! I had 3 guys working on this car and the guy who put the Opti in said he didn't setup the timing because he didn't think he had to! He thought that the computer automatically set the timing?!? Is that possible?? Or am I pulling the Opti to check the timming....if you can?? Man, this car is killing me! LOL

IF the opti was installed right[indexed correctly] it is 'timed' there's nothing more to it than correctly installing it.. it can be forced on wrong tho..

Re: Does the Opti-Spark control FI Pulse?

Thanks for the reply.....well, we took the OPTI off & the "Disk" inside is warped and hits what I would describe as the "Reader". It's perfectly flat EXCEPT for one section. COULD that cause a misfire situation?? HELP! LOL

If the optical shutter disc is warped, you have a defective Opti. That's the problem with only replacing the cap/rotor.

Re: Does the Opti-Spark control FI Pulse?

Ok, replaced the Opti and all WAS good, till the car warmed up to about 160-170* then the roughness & stalling started again. So, it seems like it fixed part of the problem, but now it does it when it gets warm. Anyone want a 1995 Firebird with a Jasper reman that runs like cr@p? LOL

Thumbs up Re: Does the Opti-Spark control FI Pulse?

Thanks for everyones help, problem SOLVED! I want to thank Injuneer for all his wisdom! This site would be nothing without people like you & many others who try & help a mechanically challenged person such as myself. The actual problem was an Intake Gasket leak! We torqued it down on the stand, but we lifted the motor by the intake bolts that we found to be loose.
