Do I really need to mark where old shock is before taking it out?

The Chilton manual says I must mark where the old shock mount is or it will be impossible to reinstall. It can only go in one way right? or am I missing something? I am putting all new Energy Suspension bushings and new upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends as well so the suspension is coming completely out.
Do I need to mark where everything is now or not?
Thanks for any help guys.

If you are not taking the spring/shock apart, there is no need.

Well I am putting new shocks in but was going to have a shop do it. I was going to pull out the assembly and then take it to the machine shop to install the new Eibach spring and KYB shocks.
They should be able to handle that right?

I dont know if a machine shop would have a spring compressor. Just take it to a local STS or Meinke. They'll switch the springs for you for cheap.

Did you take the front struts out yet? If you didnt, mark one stud on top and which hole it goes into. The holes in the strut towers look evenly spaced but are not. This also matters when you put the spring back on the strut.

Ok cool, I can mark one of the studs that won,t be a problem.
I will let whoever does the shock and spring worry about their end of it.
Thanks for the tips.

Yea, becuase once you put the other spring on it, you wont be able to turn the top studs to fit in the holes an still match up the bracket that the brake line sits in.

The deal is, the alignment between the upper mount and where the lower shock bolts to the a-arm must be maintained. The reason is, once the spring is put back on and pressure is released, you cannot rotate the top or bottom to try to line it up.

Ok, I think I get it. The new shock needs to be in the same place that the old shock is in now to line up correctly. I think I can handle that.

Thanks Guys
