Do I need a tune with this cam?

I know I've posted a couple of times about this cam. I'm under the impression that you don't need a custom tune with this cam, Compucam 104227 210/224. If you don't, would something like Ed Wright, or the like, still be worth it? If you do, would a mail order tune be worth it or should I just get it dyno tuned? Thanks.

You will get the most performance out of your cam with a dyno tune. It does cost a lot more than a regular tune, but I think it's worth it.

I would get your car tuned because you will get more out of your car with a good tune. PCMforless is a decient mail order tune along with Ed Wright.

i would stay away from Ed Wrong.

PCMforless or www.madz28.com is the way to go for a mail order tune!

LOL... Thanks for the info. What's the turn around time on there mail orders. I know this is an open ended question, but what would be a general hp/Tq gain?

I advise buying LT1 edit or some other tuning software and doing it yourself.

tuning for WOT should be done on a dyno - or else one is just guessing and closed loop tuning can be done by yourself with a bit of study.

You would also be in a good position to tune for any future changes - gears, thermostate, tire size and so on.

there is a large seperate LT1 edit board with lots of great tips and advice.

The can your getting does not NEED programming but the drive will be better with some tweaking.

When I put in my hot cam - also a cam that does not NEED programing - it ran ok but the drivve was much better after I change the idle and adjusted a number of other parameters.

I likley did not improve the top end power (no dyno tune) but I certainly made it smoother and more responsive in closed loop.

But to answer your question - turn around is a week depends on how busy they are and HP gains vary greatly by cam and setup.

Thank you very much, a week turn around, is very doable. As far as LT1 Edit, I agree, I just don't have a laptop or a cable.

I am planning on doing a few dyno runs once I put
the same cam in my car. I have the HPP+ with the
cam/header/supercharger card and would like to
see the difference between the stock program, the
regular HPP program and the HPP w/cam program.

I bought a 97 PCM so I can also try a mail order tune
and compare it to the rest. If time and money permit,
I will dyno all these combinations. Any results will be
posted for all to share, but it's still a couple of months
away.

To put in more old school terms putting a cam in without reprogramming is like putting a cam in a carbed car and not rejetting, resetting the idle or retiming it. Sounds like a real bad idea put like that doesn't it?

I've had the same thing for awhile. It was useful at first, but now I what more.
