Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
Re: Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
if you still run emissions equipment (and dont want an SES light) tuning isnt required. however, from what ive heard its kinda stupid not to for the $: theres a lot of guys that claim 15rwhp with headers and another 15 with a tune after that.
Re: Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
I have been told by Ion at Madz28.com that no special tune is needed for headers on OBD1 applications.
I did request tuning to deactivate the damn EGR valve. I removed and blocked off the holes to avoid the dreaded inatke oil leak and code 32.

Yeah that's cool. I definitely plan on a tune, I'm just wondering if I don't do it right away if the car will run like crap. I may wait a month to get a MadZ28 tune, but if the car was going to run like crap then I'd make it a point to try to do it now.The thing is I plan on bolting these headers up this week.

I am doing the tune though.
Re: Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
I wouldnt expect any problems, but it is an LT1 so you never know
Idk if you are doing a tuneup or anything in the process, but if you are getting new 02s keep the old ones in at first. I have heard that the "break in" of coating on the headers can mess with your 02 sensors, so youre better off being safe and letting the old ones take the punishment.

Re: Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
It should be known that a 93 LT1 definately needs to be addressed if it has been tuned for no headers.. They typically lean out a good bit.. in fact alot of full bolt on 93 cars will be 14.0 AFR with the stock tune.
Also, the flash cars will typically be happy with less timing with a set of nice shorties/long tubes.

I'll probably shoot you a PM over at LS2.
Re: Do I need PCM tuning after headers?
Just for further info I put a set of Edelbrock TES headers on my 94 over the thanksgiving break, still with the stock tune and it runs/drives just fine. I think my gas mileage has dropped right around 1 mpg though (I've seen 16.5ish last two fillups, was almost always around 17.5 before), not sure if I've been getting on it a little more or if I'm running richer or something after the headers (I figured it would lean out, not get richer, no idea though). Anyway, like I said it runs fine on the stock tune...
