Pennnnnzzzoiiillllllll Or never changing it. That is a mess. I saw worse in an s10 2.8 that was penzed out many years ago. It is amazing to me how many of these things still run with all that gunk in them. I agree with everyone 2 choices-clean as best you can and run some cleaner through there and take your chances or have it tanked and cheepie rebuilt with rings/bearings, then new springs and valve seals etc. My .03 1/2 cents.

I would clean the devil out of the thing...that lt1 is putrid.
Mine wasnt near that bad @ 80k
The only thing I have seen that bad is a 92 model 250 work truck...that wasnt good either...prolly just as bad.

That has to be the product of poor maintenance and overheating.

damb, ussually that results from not changing oil or using the wrong type of oil & overheating for a long time, sythetic oil cleans that stuff up but I guess its too late now

Nothing like a bunch of car enthusiasts to be disgusted by a little dirt. Used to be most any car with 50K+ miles would look like this. I have a friend that had a pretty good solution on an engine that looked like that. Get a couple of gallons or varsol or kerosene and pour in lifter valley and valve covers and let it drain out the bottom of the pan. Repeat over and over. THis will wash out the worst of the sludge. It would probably be a good idea to pull the pan and clean the pan and oil pump screen as well as replace the oil pump on a car with this many miles. Replace the thermostat while you have the water pump off. Running too cold all the time aids sludge buildup. That engine could easily go another 100k with normal driving.

A LITTLE dirt, for one thing that is SLUDGE. Another thing, is most cars do NOT look like that after 50k if they are maintained. This car was clearly not.
