Question Differences in LT1s motors

Ok im going with a 396 stroker kit in my 97 SLP Camaro SS and dont want to touch the origanl motor in the car because im keeping this one for life but on with the question is there any differences in LT1 motors from my car being a SLP SS and just a normal z28 out of like a junk yard. im not looking to tack one step foward and two steps back.

And the second question would be could i run my lt4 hot cam kit with the 396 stroker kit?

Thanks for the Help

Re: Differences in LT1s motors

In that respect, the F-body LT1 and Y-body LT1 are very similar throughout all models, but the Impala etc got the Iron heads, which supposedly flow better exhaust, but the extra weight is not worth the negligible difference. Unless your car is one of the 100 SS's that got the LT4 package in '97, your engine is no different than the rest of ours.

Anyone that puts a hotcam in a 396 needs to pay someone to build their engine. That cam works pretty well in a 350, you really should go bigger for a 396, as the cost of a cam/valvetrain will seem small once you get into all of the costs.

Re: Differences in LT1s motors

The engine Year variations are as follows:

93 motors didnt use MAF setup, they used some air density set up

93-94 motors also had 24lb injectors

95-97 motors had 26lb injectors

95-97 got the vented opti spark which causes it to fail less

93-95 heads were the best for porting because they were a little bit thicker

93-97 Impalas and Caprices had iron heads which are harder to port, need maching for RR's, plus extra weight

95-97 had the option of having 2 cats for CA cars

93-94 Used OBD 1

95 Used OBD 1 with an OBD 2 connector

96-97 used OBD 2

As far as between SLP SS and Z28, your intake would be different, maybed your exhaust manifolds, but nothing else really

As for the hotcam kit, the LT4 cam isnt the same as the GM Hotcam. I can't find the specs, but the aftermarket GM hotcam is more agressive than the LT4 cam. I would still reccomend a bigger cam for a 396 though. If you have to pass emmissions, a 224/230, but i had heard of as big as 236/244 112lsa passing. If you got a cam on a 114 lsa it would be easier to pass than a 112lsa. I believe the hotcam is a 114 lsa cam.

If you don't have to pass emmissions i would go with one of Lloyd Elliotts custom-grind cams. They are made by Joe Overton i think. He will help you determine exactly what cam you need, and make it. They are also somewhere around a 109 lsa which is a really mean idle. But that would be changed depending on what you plan on doing. I would say that the hotcam is just way too small for a 396.
